The real luxuries

For no other reason that because we could, Jaia and I hopped on a bus this morning and headed downtown.  I have seen and been on more buses than I could ever count over the years, but Jaia had yet to step on one.  She was giddy with delight at the mere suggestion. And more so once the bus was rolling.

She spent most of the ride checking out all the passengers, and much to my embarrassment, commented on a few.  Loudly.

” Mama, that lady looks like a fox.”

“Mama, that lady has funny hair.”

“What is that man eating?”

It was awesome.  I can’t wait to do it again.

contributor mark - hilarious! great snaps, Shan.

Progress report.

So, I’m officially through my first month of being a full-time mom/part-time employee.  And so far the decision has been an excellent one.  Most days.

Let me explain.

Getting to spend every day at home with Jaia has been a blessing.  I’m a much, much happier person now.  I feel less stressed, less tired, and less anxious.  It’s been amazing.

But it’s been busy.  Almost too busy.  Trying to fit in my work before Jaia wakes up, while she’s napping and in the evenings means I have very little time to myself.  Much less than before.  I find, to make up for it, I’m staying up later than I should and getting less sleep than I’d like to.  But truly, these are small sacrifices compared with what I gain by this life change.

And I think Jaia is enjoying it too.  Most days.

Let me explain.

It has been the wettest, yuckiest summer that I can remember.  When you are 2  1/2, being forced to stay inside rather than go for a walk or play at the park is less than ideal.  There are only so many puzzles you can do and pictures you can colour before you are aching for something more.  Also, early on, we made loads of plans for playdates and get-togethers with friends who are also off during the week, and very few of those have actually happened.  The weather, visits from family, unexpected trips out of town and and mismatched schedules have duped all of our plans.

The rest of the summer is taken up by a couple of weddings, a long-overdue vacation (that will include me dipping my toe in the Pacific ocean for the very first time), visits with family, and Jaia’s first ride on a horse.  And once we are back, there are only a few weeks before fall comes.  I can’t believe how fast it whipped by.  The warm, somewhat dry days have barely arrived and they are almost gone.

Indian summer anyone?  I’m in.

claudia - Glad to see you’re enjoying the time at home!
I’d like to point out that Lima is on the Pacific coast…so not your first time 🙂

What we've been up to lately…

It’s been awhile since you’ve seen the Bean in action.  Here are a few to keep you smiling until next time we see you…

1. 9 seconds of cuteness

2. Wiggling at Mont Cascades with Krista and Nicholas

3. Tricycling about town

Enjoy!

Auntie Jenny - Ok, I’ve just spent the past 20 minutes watching these over and over! So great.

I love the look on her face when she says she doesn’t have a helmet…

Can’t wait to see her! I’m counting down the days.

Kris - My favorite is still the bowling video. I could watch Jaia-TV over and over. RATS!

Lions and tigers and bears, Oh my!

Though if Jaia were to be saying it it would be ‘Pandas and tigers and zebras, Oh my!’  Those are her latest faves.  And today she saw all three.  She and I are in Virginia, visiting my mom for her birthday, and today we all went to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. We dressed her up in her giraffe dress and drove into the city and a ‘not so hot day’ according to my parents.  At 85 degrees Fahrenheit (or 29+ degrees Celcius) and the humidity at about a million percent, I’d beg to differ.  But honestly, after the craptastic weather we’ve been having in Ottawa, this was actually a nice change.

I’ve been to this zoo once before, almost a decade ago – when the Giant Pandas had just arrived from China.  Now the zoo is all Panda, all the time.  And rightly so, they are GORGEOUS.  And adorable.

Jaia was smitten and wanted to see him from every angle.  We obliged.

She was also super impressed with the gorillas.  There were quite a few to watch, but seeing the big male stand up and beat on his chest and the mama with the teeny baby were the highlights.

Jaia had an amazing time.  We all did.  And just watching her face light up up as we went from area to area was enough for me.  But really, anyone would have enjoyed themselves.

Zoos are awesome.  And so are Red Pandas.

And Papoos are awesome too.  Just ask Jaia.

Dan - So jealous! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Wish I was there with my girls :(.

And agree – red pandas *are* awesome. They look mischevious.

Auntie Jenny - This goes without saying but… great photos!

Can’t wait to see you guys in a few weeks.

July 12, 2009 - 11:12 pm

Angela Reid - just wanted to stop by and say hi, how are things?

July 13, 2009 - 2:42 pm

Auntie Lizzie - Great pictures…wish I could have been there too!

As heard around the Fullerton homestead today…

Jaia:  “Mama, you’re going to be the mama.  Baby (her doll) will be the baby.  I’ll be the big girl.”

Mama: “Who will Panda (her stuffed panda) be?

Jaia:  “He’ll be the bear.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jaia: “Mama, do you like love my belly?”
Mama:  “I do.  And I love your nose and your elbow and your hair and your toes and your smile and hand and your eyes and your fingers.
Jaia:  “You forgot my thumb.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jaia :  “I’ll be right back, Mama” (as she heads towards the stairs.)

Mama:  “Oh, where are you off to?”

Jaia:  “I’m going to the store to buy eggs.”

Auntee Jennee - Too Cute. You must be enjoying your time at home!!

July 17, 2009 - 1:04 pm

Lisa - I love it. What a cutie.
Here is a conversation Gabrielle had with herself out loud at daycare this week. Upon opening the snack cupboard she says
“what does gabby want to eat today? Fishies? (gold fish crackers) hmmmmmm no……bears? ( teddy grahams)ummmmm…nope! Baby cookies?? (arrowroot) ….uhhhh OK!!!”

at which point she grabbed them and closed the cupboard door! Some of her friends can still barely talk so this kind of thing always amazes me….
