September 27.

There are not many things I’ve done in my life consistently for 10 years.  I’ve certainly not lived in the same house for ten years.  Or had the same job, or driven the same car.  I’ve not lived in many cities straight for 10 years or even attended the same school.

But 10 years ago today, I met Dan and we’ve been together ever since.  I’ve posted about it here, here, and here.

Double digits, though.  Seems impossible that it’s already been 10 years.  TEN.  Holy crap.  That just seems like a long time.  A huge milestone.  Deserving of jewelry maybe?  😉

I find that I am a little more sentimental about the date we met than the day we got married.  You see, a marriage is planned.  The day is chosen.  Details are decided upon.

A first date though – that is more by chance.  You have no idea how it’s going to go.  You are hopeful, but not sure.

The day I met Dan changed my life forever.  The day I married him, it just got better.   Both are significant, and though most people I know don’t celebrate a dating anniversary, especially after 10 years, it still and and will likely always be one of my favourite days of the year.

Sadly though, what I’m lacking to add to this post are current pictures of Dan and I.  Even a shameless selfie.  Renos (Dan), photoshoots (Me), birthday parties (Jaia), etc. have kept us from really enjoying some time all together as a family lately.  With no plans for life to settle down in the coming months (visuelle photography has more shoots booked this fall than ever before), we just have to start making Fullerton time a priority.  Maybe even this weekend…?

Happy first date day, Dan.  On to decade number 2.  I can’t wait to see the fun it will bring…

Dan - If the next 10 years are as eventful as the last 10 years, then we are in for quite a ride! Dinner tonight on Elgin street? I’ll meet you at Pancho Villa at 5:30. We can hit Sugar Mountain after for ring pops for everyone! (thus satisfying jewelry request :))

Auntie Jenny - Wow, congrats Fullertons!

Carole - Congrats on your first decade together, Shan & Dan! You have certainly accomplished a great deal in that time. Marty and I still acknowledge our dating anniversary (coming up on 18 years). It just seems more relevant since there are 9 years between our dating anniversary and our wedding anniversary. 🙂

Happy Birthday Auntie Jenny!

We love you and look forward to seeing you soon.

Dominik - not sure which is better: Dan’s hairstyle or Jen’s facial expression…

A keeper

For a few reasons, we moved Jaia to a new school this year.  For a few reasons, we were nervous about it.  We attended a parent’s night last night at the school, and it set lots of nervousness to rest.  The school, staff, and environment are all great.

We were able to see Jaia’s desk and some of her work.  This gem was worth highlighting.  We’re lucky parents.

(note Wes’ hair “wings” … very true to life!)

Sushi!

As you can see, both kids take after their daddy.

Jaia’ favourite was the fish eggs (not pictured), while Wes liked the seaweed salad.

Strike one off the ol’ bucket list

Have you heard the story about a man who, as he was about to mark a milestone birthday and turn 60, set out on his horse to ride  from Red Deer to a rodeo in Beechy, Saskatchewan, some 600 kms away?

He said he wanted to strike it off his bucket list.

He travelled with only the horse he was riding and a pack horse that carried all that he thought he needed – a tent, some supplies and his trusty guitar.

Each day ended with a stop to set up camp and let the horses rest overnight, and every morning began with a pack up before he would head back out on the road.

A eight days and a couple hundred kms into the journey, the horse he was riding injured its foot and rather than pressing on, the man decided the animal’s health was more important and decided to pack it up and head home.

All was not lost.  Someday soon, perhaps for his next birthday, he plans to make it back to the same spot where he was forced to stop and continue on to make it to his final destination.

I love stories of people doing the impossible.  I love bucket list’s being whittled down.  I love taking a BIG birthday and celebrating it in a way no one expects.  I love bravery and determination.  I love thinking (and doing) outside the box.

This story really hits home for me.  For our family.  We too like to scratch things off our own bucket list, no matter how big or how small.  How easy or how hard.

But the real reason this story hits home, is that we know this man.  This amazingly brave man.  Jaia and Wes call him Grandpa.

And today is his 60th birthday.

Happy birthday, Grandpa.  Thanks for always being an inspiration to your kids and to your grandkids.  This will be one of the stories that will be told and re-told and passed down from one generation to the next.  And what a story it is!

We love you very much.
