A Letter to my 6 year old.

Dear Jaia,

Tomorrow morning, when you wake up, you’ll be 6 years old.  Well, that’s not entirely true.  You won’t officially turn 6 until 11:51 pm, when you decided you could wait no longer to meet and greet your anxious parents.  That’s so you, though.  Making a grand entrance but letting others take centre stage…

Your arrival that night was not an easy one.  I’m not very good at remembering most things, but I still remember every single second of those 30 loooong hours.  But, Kid, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.  It was our story and one I’m proud of.  There was a happy ending after all.  Or, make that a beautiful beginning…

Tomorrow morning we will wake you up with a birthday song and a cupcake to eat.  A Fullerton tradition and one that you are suddenly old enough to remember.  I thought I was being sneaky as I snuck the cupcake into the fridge this afternoon when you asked if that was your ‘birthday morning cupcake’.  I pretended it wasn’t.  You did not buy it for a second.

As if you would.  I’m a bad liar and you are way too clever.  You are already killing grade 1, reading chapter books and loving learning French and math.  Even with a switch to a new school and a whole new batch of friends in tow, you are thriving.

Not every day is easy, though.  In fact, some days are hard.  You and your brother often make me feel like I should add referee to my resume and you find ways to test boundaries and my limits but at the end of the day, I figure i must be doing something right.  You, Jaia, are such a great kid.  You are polite and sweet and soft.  You treasure your family and you are loyal to your friends.  I love that you are fearless.  I love your laugh.  I love the look on your face when you score a goal in soccer, but more that when you retell it to your dad, that you mention how well the team did and have to be reminded to tell him about the goal, like it was secondary.

Jaia, I’m still amazed that you are already 6.  Part of me wishes I could freeze you as the fiery 5 year old that you are at this very second, but the other part of me cannot wait to see how this year and each year after will play out.  No matter the number of candles on your cake, I will always adore you and the amazing person you are.

Happy birthday, my Bean.

Visit with the Man in Red

Wesley’s first visit (at 8 months old) left him confused.

The year after, he was kinda freaked out.

This year though, that kid was beaming.

As was his sister.

His parents?  Happy as clams.

Santa is awesome.

Auntie Jenny - Adorable! Miss those two little faces.

Cathy - What a lovely Christmas picture of them with Santa! So cute!

Winter has arrived!

I was abducted by aliens.  That’s the only explanation that makes any sense.  It’s more likely than a Shannen that has been eagerly anticipating the arrival of snow like I have for the past few weeks.

I’ve said it before.  I. Do. Not. LIke. Snow.  Or winter at all, actually.

But this year, I’ve had ants in my pants about it’s delayed arrival and wanting nothing but to send Wes to the window to look outside and see his expression when h notices the white stuff has blanketed the ground overnight.  He’s 2 and a half and is in the beautiful stage where he is starting to ‘get’ all the things that we adults cherish about childhood.  Christmas, and wintertime in general, fill him with a sense of awe at this stage, and I’m so excited to get to watch it all unfold.

On Saturday afternoon, much to my surprise, it started snowing in the early afternoon.  Not just snow, but beautiful snow!  Giant flaked snow.  Maybe the biggest, fluffiest flakes I’ve ever seen.

As soon as Wes was up from his nap, I got my wish.  We sent him to the back door to look out and he yelled, “SNOW!!  It’s snowing!”  And not 5 minutes later, both kids (and both parents) were dressed in their gear and enjoying the mild weather.

And what comes naturally with fluffiest snow?  Snowman building!!

I even dug out the AMAZING $9 snowman kit I picked up last winter.  Unfortunately, we had a pitiful snowman season in 2012 and it didn’t get used…until now.  So adorable.

So proud!

He is cute.  Or was.  It was a little TOO warm and Frosty keeled over an hour later.  But the kids were inside, sipping on hot chocolate with marshmallows and were none the wiser.

I hear we are expecting more snow tonight.  Perhaps Frosty will get a second chance tomorrow.  But if not, there’s a looooong winter ahead of us and many more opportunities in store.

Cathy - Hi Shannen Wesley, Mykayla and I are looking at your snowman pics! So cute. The kids look like they are having a blast! Where did you pick up your snowman kit???? I would love to do that with the kids too (when we get more fluffy snow). That was an awesome Saturday afternoon!!!

Such a Perfect Day

I love Georgetown.  Ever since I lived in Virginia and worked in Washington, D.C. in my  20s, I have loved Georgetown.  It is not super close to where my parents live anymore, so getting there for a visit when I am in town isn’t always an option.

On our last trip though, we decided to head down to the heart of Georgetown, as a family, and walk around.  It was colder than expected and time outside was attempted in short bursts, but it felt so awesome to be back and to finally share it with my three favourite people.  Perfect.

Julie - Me too! I loved walking there across the Dunbarton bridge from my apartment in DuPont Cirlce. Awe DC, forever in my heart.
