Happy birthday, Dan-o.

We spent the weekend and last night celebrating Dan’s birthday.  His friends went all out to make this birthday one of his best yet.  I know I had fun!  But then, I love birthdays and even more than birthdays, I LOVE surprises.  I’m planning a full post on that later – so stay tuned.

But, today is the ‘real’ day and I thought he deserved another day of attention and spotlight.  Happy birthday, my love…

Hello to Shannen and Jaia 🙂 We miss you!

Friday Goodness

Friday again.  I don’t know how it happened, but this week just FLEW by.  Not that I’m complaining.

Let’s get to it.

1. DADDY-JAIA DAYS –  With work and renos taking up the majority of Dan’s time over the last few months, he has had very little time to spend with just Jaia.  Short grocery trips or errands to run don’t count.  They barely get quality time together, without me tagging along.  But this Friday sees them having the whole day to themselves, sans Mama.  I am on course all day and they will have all day to catch up.  They are going to have a blast.  And yes, I’m jealous.

2.  PAID PHOTOGRAPHY – I’ve been bursting at the seams with this one.  I took some headshots for a friend’s workplace and her boss liked them so much he hired me to shoot the rest of the staff and to take some promotional shots to be featured in their window!  I’m over the moon.  Seriously.   (Huge thanks to Sarah for setting up the meeting and for singing my praises.  You are quite the cheerleader, my friend!)

3.  WEEKEND SURPRISES – Somehow, some way, I was able to orchestrate a MAJOR surprise for Dan’s birthday weekend.  And better yet, I was able to keep it to myself and  not spill the beans about it until the right moment.  And the right moment rocked this afternoon when I walked in the house, followed closely by Crispy, one of Dan’s best friends and the best man at our wedding.  Dan’s face was priceless.  I thought for sure he had an inkling, but apparently not.  I love a good surprise.  Especially when I’m the one doing the surprising…

4.  KIDS IN BIG SUNGLASSES – Jaia insisted on wearing my sunglasses the other day as we ventured out.  She has her own super adorable ones that actually fit her, but mine were more appealing for whatever reason.

5.  BABY KICKS – There are some things about pregnancy that I could do without – especially at this point in the pregnancy.   But no matter what, I will never, ever tire of baby kicks. In the ribs, in the bladder, anywhere.  I’m loving every single one of them.  Keep it up, Baby Frank.

Happy last Friday in March!!

Bakerella

No, not Jaia or I.  The website.  I came upon it the other day and have been salivating ever since.

It was also the source of the recipe that Jaia and I attempted on Friday (mentioned in Friday Goodness).  They are called cake pops and they were delish!  Sweet to the point of ‘eat only one or you’ll regret it’, but delish if you have self-control.  My sister, her husband and I apparently do not have self-control and regretted it for a few hours afterwards, but it didn’t stop me from having another the following day.  And maybe even the day after that.

They were fairly easy to make and would be a hit at any party that you are asked to bring dessert to.  And they are (or can be) to-die-for cute:

I am confident enough in myself to admit that mine turned out nothing like these.  They were plain pink (Jaia’s choice – obviously) with purple cake inside (Jaia’s choice – obviously).  But as plain as they were, they were still pretty cute.

I want to and will make them again, I just need a reason and someplace to take them.  One cake mix makes about 40-50 of these little gems and I refuse to have that many at my disposal ever again.  Dangerous.

And here’s my little Bakerella in action:

Tiny Dancer

Last week Jaia had her last ballet class.  The way it works is that parents aren’t allowed in to watch during the sessions until the last one, where they set up chairs and treat it like a bit of a recital.  Though when the dancers are ages 3-5, there isn’t much structured dance, so you basically watch them follow the instructor and (sometimes) do what she says.

You might remember from Jaia’s first class that following the instrustor wasn’t her strong suit.  A strong-willed, independent little girl, she wanted to dance the way she liked to and not bother with the rest of the class.  It was hilarious.

But 6 or so weeks later, as we sat there looking like parents from a Hallmark commercial smiling and waving at her while she performed,  we were shocked at the transformation – and the confidence.  She not only followed instruction, she was raising her hand with the others to offer suggestions, waiting her turn in line (patiently) to get her crown and ribbon, dancing along with the class (though she was throwing her own moves in between) and most importantly, was actually happy to be there.

Up until a couple of months ago, this kid was painfully shy.  Even with friends or family she would see often, the first half an hour of any visit saw her peeking out from behind my legs trying to scope out the scene and get comfortable before she would come out of hiding.  But since turning 3, a switch flipped.  She’s a new person.  She makes friends out at the park and is much less introverted.   I almost cried the day I watched her hold hands with a little girl and go down the slide with her as if they’d known each forever.  (Ok, I did cry a little, but no one saw me so it barely counts.)

It’s crazy to how fast she is growing up and becoming her own little person.  She amazes me every day.  She has plans, dreams, ideas and thoughts all her own.  And lots of them.  Now that this session of ballet is over, she’s taking a few days to decide if she’d like to join swimming, soccer or ballet this time.  I’m secretly hoping for soccer but I’m letting her decide.  Then again, she probably wouldn’t take my suggestion anyway so I’ll keep mum…unless she asks for my opinion.

Ha.  Fat chance.

Dominik - Great pictures, Jaia is a very beautiful girl. I would suggest soccer, in the end she can become a goalie and can even mix this with her ballet experiences 🙂

Dan - She gets the maniacal smile from Mamma, not Daddy 😀
