Rats.

Part of the problem of having a camera on you ALL. THE. TIME. is the infinite amount of pictures that I take on a daily basis.  And with so many pictures comes the obvious side effect of forgetting about all the awesome moments that I am able to capture.  Some are blog-worthy and yet they get left behind.  Like this one…

When you come into my house from the garage, which is how I enter 99% of the time, you pass through the laundry room.  It’s a long, skinny room and not one that you’d hang out in often or for any length of time.  In our laundry room, like in most laundry rooms, we house our share of dirty laundry.  And not that it’s on display for all to see, it’s there.

The last time my parents were in town, my mom happened to be walking through and she glanced towards the back where you might find the hamper.

She screamed.  The last thing she had expected to see were two eyes staring back at her.  Thankfully, rather than a real rodent, it was Jaia’s little rat stuffie, Ratatouille.  How he got in there, I have no idea, but I spent the better part of that day recalling my mom’s face and chuckling to myself.

Although not on purpose, it couldn’t have been better executed.

So we wait

This year has brought another new adventure. Jaia, for the first time, is taking the bus to and from school.

It was completely her choice. And she seems to really enjoy the independence.

But for me it’s bittersweet. On the one hand it is a time/stress saver for me – having to wake Wes up from his nap to run out to the school multiple times in the middle of winter last year was less than fun.

But on the other hand, it is just another stark reminder of how big she’s getting. A real little lady.

I have to admit though, Wes and I are truly enjoying our walk over to the bus stop every afternoon while we wait for the girl to arrive (except for today when the bus was 15 minutes late and no one was answering the phone at the school),

We drop rocks in the sewer, pick dandelions, wave at city buses and look for airplanes together, but mostly we wait.

The road to delirium – in pictures.

I think my brother is pretty rad.  I always have.  We are VERY close in age (I’m older, he’s bigger) and so we’ve kind of always had each other to lean on through the goods, the bads and everything in between.  I’m pretty sure we’ve not kept one secret from each other, ever.

Through the years Sean had some girlfriends.  Most did not pass the test.  The sister test.  I was not impressed.  When sister isn’t happy, brother knows it.  Brother often does not care, but he knows.

And then he married Vinnie.  It was like I went sister-in-law shopping and chose her myself.  She’s the yin to his yang.  The carrot to his peas.  The peanut butter to his jelly.

And then they made a baby.  A perfectly sweet and GORGEOUS little lady that we are all already completely smitten with.

But that baby had to get here.  And early on I hinted that I would like to be there.  I reminded them a lot that I should be called first so I could drop everything  and get there.  I also hinted that if said labour were to take place on a weekend, that would be so much easier for me as I wouldn’t have to come up with a sitter on short notice.

Araya complied.  She broke mommy’s water on a Friday afternoon.  Perfect.  Dan came home and took over kid duty and I was off to the hospital with Vinnie’s mama to wait, rather impatiently, for Araya to make her debut.

Little did we know at the time, but there was no rush.  Araya wanted some attention, but was SO NOT READY to come out.  But there was no way either me or mama Singh wanted to go home.  So we stayed.  And we even mostly stayed out of the way.

Over the next 19 hours or so, we walked a lot, talked alot and laughed a lot.  And surprsingly, while Vinnie took teeny cat naps, Sean and I got out for fresh air, coffee and quick walks.  On our first walk, I snapped a self-portrait of the two of us and decided we should snap one on each walk.  We did not know at the time that these quick pics would document our long path from excited energy to exhausted delirium.

Would you like to come with?

8:30 pm

11:30 pm

12;40 pm (First signs of crazy).

2:55 am (Laughing at nothing.  Yup, crazy).

3:36 am (You are getting very sleepy).

5:19 am (Mama Singh, also feeling crazy, decided to join us).

7:24 am (Notice it is light outside again.  These was taken a few moments before Sean, Mama Singh and I were in hysterics about stinky shoes and karata suits and also only about 6 minutes before we all finally and literally passed out).

And the last in the series was taken after Araya decided to join us.  Showers were taken, clothes were changed, naps were had (by me – Sean, the new daddy, was still fairly zombie-ish) and meals were eaten.  Oh, and LOTS of coffee was consumed.  I was feeling fresh as a daisy.  Look at me, the very proud new auntie.

And there you have it.  I want to sincerely thank Sean, Vinnie and Araya for allowing me to be a part of one of the longest, most fun, most exciting nights of my young life.  I’m honoured that I could be there with you.  Just another chapter to add to our long story.

And for the record, Sean, it WAS your feet.

Dominik - thanks for sharing the story, it really made me smile – looks like you had a “great night” 🙂

September 19, 2011 - 4:25 pm

Vinnie Lyon - And a big thanks to you Shannen for being there with us, for keeping us laughing, for holding my hand and talking me through contractions, and for being a trooper and staying for as long as you did…

Terry Fox Run 2011

Dan and I spent the summer prepping, fundraising for and sweating about The Ride the Rideau.  In fact, I put very little thought to much else.  And then it ended.  We did it and it was over.

And it’s not that I need to fill a hole, but I started to notice the signs around town for the Terry Fox Run.  I thought back to last year when Jaia did her first walk and how she really took an interest in Mr. Fox and what he did.  I thought it might be fun for all of us to take part together this year.

A quick website visit told me that this is my kind of run.  I can sign up on the day of.  I can donate what I want.  I can do the run anytime between 9 and 1pm.  A procrastinators dream run.

So this Sunday, Dan and I and the kids are going to lace up our shoes and do our first 5 k all together.  I’ve also already recruited Liz and Alicia to join us.  I’d love if more would come out.  I don’t need to remind you of the importance of this run, and specifically THIS run.  It is taking place not only here in Orleans, but also downtown and in cities all across Canada.

If you are without plans this Sunday, why not run 1, 5 or 10K and Terry’s dream alive.  If you are local and want to run with us, let me know.

Holy fire trucks, Batman!

This little boy is fire truck crazy.  Well, any motorized vehicle, actually.  But especially fire trucks.

The other day the local fire department was doing a sweep to remind people to change the batteries in smoke detectors and made their way to our street.  Not one, not two, but THREE fire trucks ended up in front of our house at one time.  THREE!.  My boy was in heaven.

The firemen must get it all the time.  They saw him gawking and pointing excitedly and invited us over to have a closer look at the truck.  I don’t know who was more excited, the little boy or the mama watching the little boy.  It was awesome.  I love happy babies.
