Anti-OAFE – Galarneau and Associates

OAFE = Outstanding Award in the Field of Excellence
Anti-OAFE = The Opposite

We don’t have a will. It’s the kind of thing that I am notorious for procrastinating until tomorrow. But I finally took initiative, searched for a local lawyer that specializes in this kind of thing, and booked an appointment for 2pm on September 13th.

I left work early to get home in time for the appointment, at my busiest time of year. We woke Wes up early to get to the appointment, and headed down the hill to Galarneau and Associates for our 2pm appointment.

We arrive there and are greeted by the receptionist. “Fullertons for 2pm”, I say. “Your appointment was for 1pm, sir,” the receptionist says. “No, it wasn’t. It was for 2pm,” I say. “She’s busy now, would you like to book another appointment?” “No thank you, not right now,” I say.

We start to leave, and the receptionist comes running out to say “Mr. Fullerton, you were right, it was 2pm!” Vindication? The receptionist explained that it was a misunderstanding and that the lawyer had squeezed in another client.

We sat for 10 minutes in the waiting room, and finally at 2:15 asked if the lawyer would be able to see us soon, as we had a hard stop at 3pm.

“I’m not sure what’s holding her up, but she also has a 2:30pm appointment, so …”

So … what did you call us back in for??!? Are you in the habit of wasting people’s time? Because you’ve wasted ours today …

But all I said was “I don’t think we’ll be able to wait.” “Would you like to reschedule?” “No.”

Pretty high up on the list of worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had. And we’re no closer to having our will in place. Grr.

Alicia - That is a terrible experience.

I haven’t done mine either and it causes me anxiety to think about it…I try not to think about it often. If you find another lawyer and have a better experience, let me know.

Ed Pundyk - That’s what you get for going to a small firm. C’mon, Shan worked for a national firm. She should know better. Bite the bullet, go downtown and go to McMIllan. Doris Corneau still works there and she’s still the best there is. She’s a bargain at any price.

PS: I don’t work there anymore, so I’m not trying to drum up business.

Time.

Have you ever wanted to freeze a moment?  A moment so amazing that you stopped in that instant and tried to memorize every single thing about it so that you would never forget it.

I’ve had several of those moments.  More than several, really, there are countless.  But I think you pay much more attention to the moments when you have a second child.  Not that they are more exceptional or more important, but I feel that you are better able to recognize how fleeting they are.

Most recently, the kids and I were at the park and they both wanted me to spin them around.  After a few spins, I took a good look at their faces while in flight.  The joy, the exhilaration was unmistakeable.  Especially Wes who is smaller and has experienced far fewer mama spins.  The look on his face, his fine, almost white hair standing straight up, his toothy smile, his closed eyes, the high pitched giggle.  It was amazing.  I knew in that instant that it was one of those moments, representing, for me, the sweet little stage he’s racing through right now.

A few days later while out with my friend Sarah and our kids, I asked her to try to capture it for me on camera.  That look.  That beautiful 16 month old face.  Pure joy in a 25 second spin.

I’d say she did pretty well.

And there’s my moment.  Captured.  Preserved.  Perfect.

Thank you, Sarah.  I will treasure this.
