New wall art

I am seriously in love with my new DIY wall art.

I have always loved the goofiness of pictures from a photobooth.  So much of my life has been captured in photobooth pictures.  Me as a child with my parents, my VERY awkward teenage years and even the months before Dan and I got married (we used a photobooth strip on our wedding invitation and wedding program).  We’ve even gone a few times with the kids.  Love.

So, with a large empty wall in our living room and feeling tired of the black framed, white matted pictures that adorn almost every other wall in our house,  I came up with the idea to incorporate photobooth-like photos into the decor.  I took the pictures, Dan came up with the idea to mount them and BAM!  Totally original art.

In other news:  The kids are having a blast using their new chalkboard.  Can’t get enough of it.  I can’t promise that it isn’t teaching Wes that it is ok to write on all the walls…but so far we are graffiti free.  So far…

Heather - Love both of these ideas SO much! Well done!

Almost..

Our family is so close to welcoming its newest member when my baby niece makes her debut in a couple of weeks.  Until then, and before they find themselves otherwise occupied, we’ve been sneaking in some special aunt and uncle time…

Vinnie Lyon - LOVE any extra time we can spend with the 2 little monkeys. We can’t thank you guys enough for throwing us such a fabulous shower, what an amazing time!

More home renos…

Picture this: It’s the mid-seventies. Pants are bell bottomed, disco is on the radio, and smoked mirrors are all the rage.

Fast forward to 1985. Times have changed. Bell bottoms are now acid-wash. Disco is out and glam is in. And those smoked mirrors? They should be long gone. And for most people they are. But the company who was building our house must have had a surplus they needed to unload…

And let’s not even talk about the the oak bannisters and spindles…

Fast forward again. This time to 2010. As Dan and I walked through the house we would buy two days later, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Smoked mirrors everywhere. Seriously. And not only were they smoked mirrors, but they were surrounded by oak frames. Horrid. I kept thinking to myself that they’d be easy enough to take down.

Want to get a better look?  Ok.  It’s worth it.

6 or so months after moving in, I finally got my wish.  Dan and his dad got the giant mirrors down.  And the removal was fairly easy.  But keeping those mirrors up on the wall took a lot so when they came down, so did half the wall.  So much so that we actually had to hire a plasterer to fix the huge holes.

A few coats of paint later and some shopping for the frames, and the 80’s were back where they belong – in the past.

(As you can see, the cats are loving it too…)

I’m seriously over the moon with how it turned out.  Having a showcase for some of my fave pictures doesn’t hurt either…

I also think the boy/girl signs on the kids bedrooms are too adorable for words.  I’ve been thinking about coating them in chalkboard paint to make them dual purpose but I haven’t had the extra minutes this week to do it.  How awesome would that be though…?

So…what do you think…?  Likey?

Next up:  Our forest green and burgundy living room gets a lighter, brighter new look.  Stay tuned.

Kris - Looks great. Those mirrors were really something else…they must have weighed a tonne. I love the gallery…and it’s something you can always keep looking fresh by swapping out photos.

Dan - If you’re scratching your head and wondering why anyone would remove such beautiful mirrors, then I have a deal for you! 1 of the 5 broke during removal, but the other 4 are ready for pickup in our garage! Start the bidding at $0.01 or all the pocket lint in your right hand pants pocket …

Alicia - Looks awesome guys.

My parents would probably like the mirrors for their bedroom. I wish I was kidding.

shannen - Alicia: A Christmas present perhaps? They are yours if you want ’em. 😉

Updating…

I’ve been busy over the last few months.  Not just with work and kids, but with the house.  While we aren’t in a position to renovate the kitchen and other big projects at the moment – finding the time for that is almost a joke at this point – the small things have been driving me crazy and with some paint, patience and a little elbow grease, I’ve been able to make some significant changes round these parts.

The first and maybe most fun was a project that I’ve been dreaming up for over a year.  Yes, since before we moved.  I had the supplies ready to do this to our old house but we moved instead.  And then I got lazy.

But it was so unbelievably easy that I can’t believe I waited so long!

So a few nights ago, I taped out a rectangle on one of our blank kitchen walls.  Used painters tale and measured to make sure the lines were straight.  And then I primed it.

Then I cracked open the can of chalkboard paint that has been kicking around forever.  With a good shake we were ready to go.

It says that you can paint a second coat within 4 hours, but I waited a full 24.  It definitely needed a second coat.

A few hours after that dried, I pulled the tape off and VOILA!

I actually did a little happy happy, joy joy dance when it was all done.  I love it.  We cannot wait to start getting into the chalk to get our doodle on.  Well, we can wait.  We have to wait 2 more days before we are supposed to draw on it.   So excited.

What do you think?  Would you turn an entire wall into a chalkboard?  Am I crazy or brilliant?

Alicia - Great idea.

My sister did it in her basement. They did an entire cityscape across one wall and the kids could draw in buildings etc…they used it for YEARS!

I think you’re going to love it!

Kris - I love it! I can’t wait to see the masterpieces to come…

Help us Ride the Rideau

Dan mentioned this a few weeks ( months?) ago, but we signed up for a 100 km bike ride from Ottawa to Merrickville.

I’ve never ridden 100 kms in one ride.  I might not have done it in 3+ rides.  Cycling is not my sport.  Not even close.  My bum is very, very scared.

But when Dan mentioned his work was putting a team together, I jumped at the chance.  A few hours on a bike? Awesome.  A few hours spent with Dan doing something fun that we’ve never done before?  Why not?  A few hours to do my part in the fight against cancer?  Where do I sign?

Cancer.  The word itself strikes a myriad of emotions in any of us who have been touched by it.  Sadness, grief, anger.  But also hope.  A hope that one day the people we love will not be taken from us after a battle with cancer.  A hope that our children won’t feel the same pain when a parent, an aunt, an uncle, a sister, a brother, a grandparent or a friend receives a devastating diagnosis.  A hope that cancer will be stopped dead in its tracks.

I have lost, but I have hope.  And if hopping on my bike to ride 100 kms can do anything, anything at all, to help that fight along, I’m in.

Not everyone can hop on a bike, whether they desperately want to or not.  But everyone can make a difference.  And this year, this time, maybe that small difference can be in the form of a small (or big!) donation in support of Dan or I.  (We’re competing, in case you hadn’t heard).

Each rider is asked to raise $1500.  Dan and I have a few supporters, but not enough.  Nowhere close.  I, for one, am terrible at asking.  I don’t like to bother people.  But I’m asking now.  Please, if you can, help us meet our goal of $1500 each.  Every dollar gets us that much closer and, more importantly, could be the dollar that funds finding a cure.  Just imagine…

No matter how big or how small…we thank you in advance for being so generous.
