the first 2 weeks of home ownership

I’m way too tired (lazy) to write proper paragraphs and such, so here’s a list of things that I’ve learned since Sonja and I got our house:

1. Home Depot is my new favourite store. I don’t have an opinion on Bed Bath and Beyond, though. There hasn’t been enough time.

2. EQ3 makes nice looking, non-IKEA furniture. Unfortunately, they can’t seem to ship anything from their manufacting plant in Winnipeg without it getting damaged. So far, Sonja and I are 0-2 (one damaged bed, one damaged dresser). Also, the movers they use are somehow smaller/weaker than I am. It would have been hilarious watching them try to get the dresser all the way up the stairs… you know, if it wasn’t my dresser. and my stairs/house. So don’t buy anything big at EQ3.

3. I don’t know how we ever lived without a dishwasher.

4. Raking leaves is sort of fun when you’re not doing it for your parents for slave labour wages.

5. Had I killed the mouse in our basement with a flicked bottle cap (I missed by about 2 inches), it probably would have been one of the top 5 moments of my life.

6. I need to buy a clock radio. Waking up to the alarm on my cellphone has lowered my quality of life by about 5 notches.

7. Unpacking the last few boxes is @!$#ing impossible. They’re all filled with crap we don’t really need and don’t have a place for, but can’t seem to throw away.

8. Chocolate-brown couches are very popular.

9. There’s no point in taping edges before you paint if the people before you didn’t bother to tape the edges before they painted.

10. With my stereo still not set up (I’m looking for a stereo cabinet that only seems to exist in my mind), we’ve been listening to the radio while we work on the house, and much to my surprise, Live 88.5 isn’t that bad. I can’t believe there’s finally a decent station in Ottawa that plays BSS, Bloc Party, the Talking Heads and pretty much every other band I like that I never thought I’d hear in Ottawa.

11. Free televisions are awesome.

12. Free televisions that weigh a deceivingly large amount and have to be placed on the second floor of a house with a narrow staircase are not quite as awesome. I’m pretty sure that the first few versions of Sony’s flat screen television (not flat panel, flat screen – big difference) were made of cement, bricks, weightlifting weights and spare truck parts. Seriously, when that television breaks, there’s no way it’s being carried back down the stairs – I’m just going to throw it out the window.

Last 5 songs: girl o’clock – the dismemberment plan; organ donor (extended overhaul) – dj shadow; little sin – the toadies; return of the b-boy – mr. lif; the fake headlines – the new pornographers

Jessie - Things I’ve Learned in the First Two Weeks of Living Without my Sister: A Loving Tribute

1) There really is a lot more room in the front hall for shoes. The reserve shoe collection has been brought out of storage and is now on display in its full, unadulterated glory.

2) Two cats says: “Cat Lover”, three cats says: “Cat Lady” – it’s a fine line, people, a fine line.

3) Making lattes in the morning is a lot more impressive when someone else is around to appreciate them.

4) Getting your ass out of bed in the morning is a lot easier when someone jumps on you and sings the CBC theme song at top volume in your ear. (Mark, are you SURE you need an alarm clock?)

5) It’s sort of an interesting feeling to look forward to staying at your sister and future-brother-in-law’s home mostly for the fact that you will at last be among the privileged few who have slept under the watchful eyes of Tom Selleck.

Congrats guys! When’s the housewarming party?

October 19, 2006 - 3:16 pm

mark - not sure yet.

the Selleck poster is currently at the poster shop being mounted and laminated by a very meticulous lebanese man who didn’t seem to have any idea who tom selleck is. his loss.

so far, Muppet seems sort of bored and lonely in her new house. I guess the adrenaline rush of constantly getting your ass kicked is something you come to miss after a while.

October 20, 2006 - 7:49 am

Kristin - Congrats, guys! I’ve been wondering how it’s going. I hear it’s beautiful…post pics!

October 20, 2006 - 11:59 am

Gary - Mark, you fool! You don’t unpack those last few boxes. Those are the boxes that go in the basement and sit there for a few years before you decide to do a “spring cleaning”, see them, and decide it’s time to throw out all of the contents because you obviously don’t need or use them.

October 23, 2006 - 7:54 am

Shannen - I so second that, Gary. And it’s precisely what we did. Unfortunately, it’s more than just a few boxes.

Apparently we keep lots of crap.

Hump Day

Wednesday is not my favourite day of the week, not by a long shot, but this one is fairing pretty well so far – and it’s only 9:25 am.

The reasons are:

1)  I just got a raise.  An unexpected raise, no less.  Excellent.

2)  Only one more day of getting up before 5 am before the weekend when Dan, the regular early morning dog-walker, returns from his Asian travels.

3)  ANTM is on tonight, and I can watch it guilt free, with only Humph and the cats around to offer silent criticism.

4)  I’m wearing comfortable pants.

5)  Even after two walks this morning, it turned out to be a good hair day (in my opinion).

6)  I’m excited about my lunch…Mmm.

7)  My work week is officially more than half over.

8)  It’s going up to 15 degrees today.

Ok…Maybe the day isn’t that fab…I can only think of these 8 reasons when my goal was to get to 10.  If I think of any more, or if any other amazing things happen, I’ll let you know.  My guess is that she’ll hold steady at 8.

October 19, 2006 - 9:13 am

Mike Machargo...the Macharg - Hey Shan,
I think its good for you, those are some pretty gnarly reasons to like Wednesday. I’m thinking you shoudl see if Thursday can compare to it…like a little competition?

Most importantly…right on about the good hair day!

Mike the Mexican

liz - Congrats on the RAISE!!!! That’s reason enough to make a Wednesday a good day 🙂

Plucked from my daily investing newsletter:

Today could be a day of horror for superstitious people who dread the number 13. According to a German professor, not only will the date be Friday the 13th, but all the digits in the numeric notation of the date add up to 13 as well.

Whichever way round the date is written – 13-10-2006 or 2006-10-13 – the sum of all the digits adds up to 13, notes Heinrich Hemme, who teaches physics at the University of Aachen.

The last time 13 coincided this way was Friday, January 13, 1520. What is more, Hemme established that 2006 is the first year since 1411 where Friday the 13th occurs twice – January 13, 2006 was a Friday.

More horrors are in store: May 13, 2011 will also be a double-13 Friday.

October 13, 2006 - 5:11 pm

dan - Delayed 2 hrs so far … I love business travel!

October 13, 2006 - 10:14 pm

sheldon - … stuck in Vancouver airport… buying a new round each time the flight is delayed… the bartender is begging for a break, he just left the bar and we nominated Dan to take over, because of his experience in these matters… not sure how much longer we can keep this up…

Maybe we won’t be flying to China on Friday the 13th after all. Latest word is we’ll be delayed until after midnight (from the original 2 o’clock departure). Maybe that German professor was onto something with the “day of horrors”.

… departure has just been postponed to 12:30 am… we’re debating if this is just a stalling tactic (so far everything else has been, for example the 3 pm departure, the 3:30 departure, the 4 pm departure, the 4:30 departure, the 7:45 pm departure… I think you get the picture). Doesn’t Vancouver have a bylaw banning takeoffs after midnight?

[break for an update on the bar situation]
the bartender is back after his smoke break, but now there’s no more draft. The Granville Island ran out a few hours ago, and now the Canadian is gone… it will be a long night…
[now back to your regularly scheduled blog]

We met an interesting man from Drayton Valley, Alberta. He’s flying to Tanzania to check out an orphanage that he’s going to be sponsoring. The orphanage supports something like 100 kids, and will close unless it gets money soon. The amazing thing is that it only takes $6000 a year to keep the place running! That’s $60 per year per kid… How long does it take you to burn through 60 bucks? I think our bar tab this afternoon is well over that…

8pm update: Air Canada is paying for dinner at a Chinese take out place in the food court, up to a max of $8… too bad this doesn’t buy much in YVR! It’s a good thing the flight doesn’t leave for 4 hours… I wouldn’t let Dan on a plane right now. I’m glad he didn’t carry through on his plan to put mustard and ketchup on the Shanghai noodles. I think a nap is in order now.

October 14, 2006 - 5:35 pm

shannen - FINALLY! A flight from hell that can’t be blamed on my bad luck!

An 11 hour flight delay is easily the worst way to spend a Friday. Good thing there was beer at your disposal to ease the pain.

October 15, 2006 - 11:22 am

Gary - Is Sheldon a real person that’s travelling to China with Dan, an alias of Dan, or Dan’s imaginary friend much like the bartender in The Shining?

October 15, 2006 - 12:12 pm

dan - Haha! Sheldon’s real – I swear.

The flight ended up leaving 11 hrs late, and after 2 planes, 1 bus, 1 boat, 2 taxis, and over 40 hrs since leaving the house on Friday morning, we arrived safely at our hotel.

I didn’t get my picks to you in time, but here’s what they would have been: STL, CAR, ATL, CHI, KC, PHI, CIN, DAL, DEN, NYJ, BUF, WAS, SD.

Back to not being able to sleep at 1am …

Check out this 1 minute film on the ‘evolution of beauty’ as seen by the people at Dove.  Makes you think…..

dan - I could look like that if I had an army of stylists work on me every day.

I wish I was pretty …

Could I be more excited?

fall-pics-2006-7sm.jpg

As I mentioned way back in September, Contributor Mark and Sonja Lasagna, otherwise known as the Woodingtons, are getting hitched.  Their date has been set and once they settle into their new house (the above being the first photo of them on record in said house) the nitty gritty wedding preparations will begin to take shape.  It’s all very exciting.  And I think I’ve been extremely patient thus far…sort of.

sonja-and-shan.bmpTo add to my excitement for the upcoming nuptuals…Miss Lasagna asked me to be a bridesmaid!  I’m thrilled!  It would have been an absolute blast to just be there as a guest, but now I get to take part!  Plus, it gives me a phenomenal excuse to drop the baby weight by next summer.  Excellent.  I needed the motivation.  And standing in front of such a big, posh crowd certainly motivates one into action.

brideviking.jpgAnd to sweeten the deal that much more, Sonja’s sister, Jessica Lasagna – Maid of Honour Extraordinaire, was just hired on in my office.  Not only is that super fun, but it also gives us TONS of face time to scheme on the bride and groom’s behalf.  All innocent scheming of course.  Nothing embarrassing.  Or mean.  Not us.  Never.

October 12, 2006 - 9:45 am

Kris - Awesome! I’m so happy for them. Miss Lasagna is going to be a beautiful bride.

When is the wedding and do they have a venue?

I suppose I could just e-mail her…but blogs are fun and I like commenting.

October 12, 2006 - 9:46 am

Jessie - Couldn’t ask for a better bridesmaid/partner in crime for wedding schemeing (sic?). Don’t worry, we’ll try to come up with ideas that don’t involve costumes or weaponry on the wedding day 🙂 Unless the Woodington’s decide to go with a Lord of the Rings/Medieval Theme – which is not something I think I would endorse. No one wants to see groomsmen in tights. Congrats to Soni and Mark on their magnificent new abode. We miss you over on Lewis Street :(, but we’re super happy for you!!

October 13, 2006 - 1:55 pm

Sonja - Thanks girls – you’re all very sweet! I’m excited about all the planning and hijinks to come. Our wedding will be on June 30th at the NAC’s Roof Top Terrace. While the house has kept me entirely too busy to get started at least those 2 particulars are done. We’re trying to get into this church in New Edinburgh so I know what I’ll be doing for the next 30 Sunday mornings…
