Bad hair. Damn.

Last week I made a hair appointment at a local ‘salon’. It was going to be my first haircut by someone other than my regular stylist, Dawna, in years. I was nervous, but had no other option. I needed it to be quick and Dawna is not only downtown, but has recently relocated to another salon and I wasn’t ready to drive all the way there.

I should have.  She destroyed my hair.  The cut is horrendous.
I’ve only had two other really bad haircuts before. Both were mullets. The first was when I was in grade 3. I actually asked for the mullet because I thought that’s what the ‘feathered’ style was. The hairdresser followed my orders and shouldn’t have. Who listens to an 8-year old, anyway?

The second time was a walk-in when I was living in Virginia. They tried to be too stylish and cut too much off on the sides. I was feeling unsure about it, but when I went out to a movie with a friend that night he took one look at me and said “Ummmm…you have a mullet. Was that on purpose?” I don’t actually remember what movie we were there to see…I can only remember sitting there in a panic about how the hair dilemma could be resolved. Go shorter? Patiently grow it out? No pictures exist of that time in my life.

Fast forward to today. I end up with a horrible haircut (not quite a mullet, but closer than I wanted to come) and absolutely no time to work on making it look better. Excellent.

Options this time? Go shorter?  Grow it out?  No, I’ll just hide in the house. Thank God it’s wintertime.

Grow, hair, grow!

Carole - I feel your pain, Shan. I’m growing out one of the worst hair cuts I’ve ever had. It resembles a haircut i had in Grade 2.

P.S. I think you should post a picture of the new do..:O)

Danielle - Bad haircuts are definitely the worst. What about going shorter? The shorter it is the less you have to style it. I really like the whole bed head look….

p.s. cute – my anti-spam word was ‘liljaia’! i love it.

Carole - I know what you are thinking. The worst hair cut I’ve ever had has to be the one I had in grade 10. Well, my friend, you would be correct! Pull out the year books. It was hideous! I think Kim had the same cut, but somehow it looked better on her.

Kristin - Yikes! Been there. I got a perm in grade 2 which was a total scar on my existence.

Jen - Just a warning…. short hair does not = less styling.

I miss the days of a ponytail.

If you went back to Dawna could she turn it into a not-so-bad haircut?

Jessie - Whatever you do, don’t go shorter. I did once and when I look back at the photos of what I thought was a “bed-head pixie-cut” look, I see that I looked more like a very butchy policewoman. Not a good look. Not at all. Also, it’s true: short hair is actually more work than long hair. The whole “short and manageable” thing is a myth, likely perpetuated by the fashion industry to keep people buying hair goop. My advice: grow it out, you have very cute hats, and you look good in them. Lesson learned: never cheat on your hairdresser. Be strong, and your hair, it will grow into a glorious mane!!

Kel Parsons - Shan, would you consider putting up a pic of yourself right now, so that those of us who REALLY know from bad hair (it’s wild-Irish-hair Kel here, remember) can assess it and then probably tell you that it really looks good? Seriously. One needs other perspectives when it comes to matters this serious.

Of course, I get my hair cut any damned place, because with this sort of mop it just doesn’t make any difference. But I’ll never lie to you about your own hair.

Day 31 – One month old!

Unbelievably, one month has already passed since Jaia arrived. It’s been a month of amazing discoveries.

So far I’ve discovered that:

  • something that tiny really can turn me to mush.
  • I can function quite well on half the sleep I’m used to getting.
  • I thought I was a light sleeper before…and it only got worse.
  • it still surprises me what Dan can sleep through.
  • Jaia makes about a million hilarious faces every day.
  • baby farts are often as loud as grown-up farts.
  • babies do grow out of some of their cutest outfits before they have a chance to wear them.
  • a stolen moment to check my email or blog is usually cut to 30 seconds, when Jaia decides that she’s had about enough of that.
  • being ‘off’ work for a year doesn’t mean that you have free time.
  • time to myself now includes grabbing a quick shower, doing laundry or going to the bathroom.
  • nothing is cuter than baby footwear, except for a baby wearing the footwear (see below, Thanks Kris!).
  • without hesitation, it’s all worth it.

Kristin - Awwww…she’s so beautiful! Nice boots, Jaia. Aunt Kris has more where those came from…keep growing!

Alicia - Happy Monthiversary Baby Jai!!!

(Hope it’s ok if you are called Baby Jai, for some reason it just flows when I think of you. Kayleigh used to, and sometimes still does, call Tehya ‘Baby Teh’. Maybe that’s why?!)

Those are some fantastic boots!

I’m happy to hear you are keeping your momma on her toes.

Kel Parsons - Shan, I hope you’re keeping all of these priceless photos in a place where they’ll be _very easily accessible_ during her teen years. They’re GUARANTEED ammunition! “Awwwww . . . look how cute you were!” To be brought out and cooed over when she brings friends home.

Hey. You gotta start thinking of blackmail now. Trust me.

Diane Belanger - It is becomming a ritual to start my day by checking out your website. How can anyone have a bad day when one sees a picture of the cutest baby in those boots!

And not to mention that Jaia has the greatest Mom!

Day 29 – Deep Sleep

Preparing for Uncle Sean’s first visit… A girl can never have too much beauty sleep.
