Imagine the world was your household …

In our house, debt is useful, but also an enemy. We take it on when we have to, but try to pay it off as quickly as possible. To have the most impact, we pay highest interest debt first, and once that’s gone, next highest interest, etc.

What if the wealthy western world used a similar strategy to allocate scarce aid dollars? What one thing could we spend money on that would do the most good?

The Copenhagen Consensus asks that question, and every 4 years they evaluate submissions and choose the best way to help the world, based on impact per dollar spent. This year, 10 ideas were submitted, ranging from ending wars to abolishing diseases. The winner? Vitamin A and zinc supplements to the developing world’s children. Cost? $60 million, a tiny fraction of the western world’s combined development aid budget.

Spending money to address climate change that humans may or may not be causing all or part of? Bottom of their list, judged by impact per dollar spent.

Fascinating to the armchair economist in me …

EAP - The global warming “problem” was ignored by the Copenhagen Concensus because they only apply their minds to real problems as opposed to ideologically driven scams whose aim is to destroy capitalism.

Making the best of rainy days…

It’s been ugly here lately. We barely get out from under one cloud when another rushes in. We’ve definitely had way more rainy days than sunny ones over the past weeks. It’s June and yet we all seem to need to wrap ourselves in sweaters and coats on the way to work because it hasn’t been above 10 or 12 degrees any morning, at least since the end of April.

After a long day of work, I look forward to nothing more than picking Jaia up from daycare so that we can play hard before dinner and up until bedtime. My long days have shrunk down to just a few hours with her, so we love to make the best of them.

Our favourite is to head outside and run around on the lawn. Jaia adores being outside and normally puts up a huge stink when we tell her it’s time to head in. But the hour or so outside at the end of the day makes it so worth it. Unfortunately, it’s been so terrible out lately, that we’ve had to coop up our play, much to the chagrin of mama and Jaia.

But yesterday we decided to make the best of it.  After reading for awhile…

Cabin fever set in.

So we got ready…

and headed out.

And then I went nutso with the camera.

I couldn’t resist.  Is anything cuter than a kid in her rain gear?

After seeing these I don’t even mind the weather so much.

Auntie Jen - ok I’m so excited for my visit and to see this little girl in person!!

Dan - That first one on the step is ridiculous. She is so cooking up a scheme to wreak havoc!

Auntie Lizzie - I HEART that little red raincoat…do you think they make those in grown-up sizes???

Peeeeeeeeeeeze.

Jaia is turning into a real chatterbox.  She talks all the time, but only by her perogative.  Never, ever on command.  If she learns a new word, we’ll try to get her to say it in front of someone and she clams up.  She is quite literally the opposite of a performer.

She’ll hold the phone up to her ear and chat with the imaginary person on the other end, but if we are actually talking to someone and put the phone to her ear, she pulls it away and just stares at it.  And that’s nothing compared to when the video camera comes out.  We have barely any footage of her from the last few months because she’ll notice it and run in the opposite direction.  She just wants nothing to do with being the star of the show.

So now, as we’ve been trying to teach Jaia how to say please when she wants something rather than just reaching her arms up and grunting for it, we thought we were taking on quite the challenge.  How to convince her to say something – on command – each time she wants something?

The first few times she ignored us.  Literally pretended she didn’t hear us and looked the other way.  A couple of times she threw a little tantrum or just grunted louder until she got what she wanted.  There were even the times where she decided that it just wasn’t worth the effort and gave up asking for X.

And then, just the other day, she said ‘peeeze’ when Dan asked her to, before he handed her her doll.  We both got so excited and she began clapping at herself.  So we tried again.  Again she said peeeeze, this time a ittle louder.  It’s like a light went off and she realized that we were immediately handing her what she was asking for if she preceded it with an adorable, squeaky little ‘peeeze’.

And now, every day since then, she’s taken no convincing.  She uses peeeze whenever we ask her to.  She’s even used it a few times without prompting.  She’s definitely catching on.  But don’t expect her to say it in front of you if you visit.  My bet is that she’ll want to master this one on her own before letting it slip out in front of an audience.

rachel Edwards - So so cute!

I can’t imagine Leo talking. It just does not compute that this will happen someday!

Updates and Fancy Dresses

We’ve been busy here at forgetful.  And most of it it isn’t the fun kind on busy.  And it’s mostly house-related.  Our house is still on the market.  It’s been almost 3 weeks now and though we’ve had a lot of traffic coming through, we have not had an offer.  Yet.

Today, in 15 minutes we are having our 4th return showing.  It’s the fourth family to come back through and our house is apparently at the top of their list.  YAY!  If we get an offer today (or soon – I’m not that much of an optimist) we can finally relax.  Keeping your house in a showhome state is not easy.  And when Jaia follows you around pulling out whatever you’ve just put away, you have to work twice as hard to keep things immaculate.  And it’s immaculate.  And I’m more than ready to not worry about how immaculate it is for a little while.

Onto other, more fun things: The Fancy Dress Party.  This has been in the works for awhile now, and I’m thrilled that it is finally happening.  Ever since I have owned a wedding dress and worn it just over 3 years ago, I’ve been in cahoots with Michelle and others to have a party where we all get to wear our favourite fancy dress (wedding, bridesmaid, prom) and hang out.  And now, in just a few weeks, I will be sporting my lovely Augusta Jones for the second time.  I even tried it on last night (in sheer excitement) and it still fits!!  No small feat, considering I had a baby since that last time I had it on.  Excellent.

I. CANNOT. WAIT.

The only question that remains…….is…….to veil or not to veil.  A very tough call, but I’m leaning towards veil.  I mean, if you’re going to wear a wedding dress, you might as well go all the way.

Auntie Jen - There is a very good chance I will be inviting myself to the Fancy Dress Party! I am waiting on the ‘yes’ from the Agrium people to book my flight to ON June 10th which means I hop on a plane to Ottawa that Friday. YAYAYA!

Kris - I want to come to the fancy dress party! Sounds awesome. Can’t wait to see the photos…

3 years!

Shannen and I were married on a rainy Sunday exactly 1096 days ago.  It feels both longer and shorter than that, for different reasons.  Longer because it feels right, shorter because we’ve crammed a lot of stuff into those 3 years!

We’ll be celebrating this weekend by celebrating the marriage of some close friends.  Very fitting, I think.  We should make sure there’s a wedding to attend this weekend every May …

Oh, and happy birthday Crispy!  It’s very easy to remember now 🙂

Kris - Happy Anniversary, you two! It definitely does not seem like three years since your wedding day…but you really have crammed a lot into those 1096 days.

Hope you have a wonderful day!
