When you are the little brother of a big sister, some toy choices are a little less conventional than other little guys.

My little Wesley. The past month has been a busy, busy one for you. You took your first loooong car ride to Virginia for Christmas and survived (barely) 10 hours in the car each way. We also hopped on a plane (not your first time in your short 8 months) and sailed back through two time zones making you, us and the poor young ones (kidless and under 25s) in the next room to deal with your 3:30am wake up calls. The last month has been tough on any sort of routine that we had sort of carved out forcing us to literally start over, with not much success so far. I have faith that life will settle down over the next couple of weeks and maybe, just maybe we can all start getting some sleep around here. Now for the good news/fun stuff. Since December 26th when you cut your first tooth you’ve seen milestone after milestone. In early January you slept through the night for the very first time. It only lasted one night, but it proves that it is possible. I probably woke up every hour on the hour waiting for that familiar sound to cut through the night, but it never came. Now if we could only sleep through the night on the SAME night… You’ve also started pulling yourself up on furniture and cruising around it, climbing stairs, and as of today, you’ve started waving. That’s a lot in just a few weeks. And it’s been keeping me on my toes. When parents say “I only looked away for a few seconds”, I finally know what they mean. In a matter of seconds you can make it clear across the room and be putting a wire in your mouth or be heading straight for the outlet. Or a vase. We’re in for some trouble, aren’t we?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This year, for my 36th birthday, I had an idea. And this one was very out of the box for me. It involved a lot of time and planning and energy (mostly Dan’s). And it came together perfectly. Beyond perfectly. It started out as a way to gather my favourite gals in early January, the most dreaded month of the year. I thought that if given enough notice, people would be eager to get out and to get together. I sent out paper invitations (Gasp! Snail mail!) about a month ahead of time. It stated that the event was ladies only and the dress was formal. Once we had the guest list, the real work started. And the fun part. Since the guests were all girls, the boys would be the ones doing the cooking, drink mixing and the serving. Dan and my brother-in-law Mark kept busy in the kitchen cooking up a meal to die for. My brother worked his buns off between time behind the bar and serving us hors d’oeuvres. They even dressed the part in crisp white shirts and black pants. Our very own wait staff…I felt a little like a celebrity. Now I’ve celebrated a lot of birthdays, but this was, by far, the most fantastic. Halfway through the evening I looked around and realized just how lucky I really am. There I was, surrounded by some of the most fantastic women I’ve ever known. And I’ve known most of them for a loooong time. As we celebrated my 36 candles, I thought back to how some of those faces were there beside me when I rang in 16 candles as well. But there were also some gals there that I’ve only known for a few years who have also become such important people in my life. See? Lucky. So lucky. Sadly, there were a few obvious missing faces. A few girls were just too far away to be able to make the festivities and they were very, very missed. Next time, right? I wanted this post to be an enormous thank you. To the girls, for showing up, for dressing up, for looking beautiful, for being so incredibly fabulous, for turning my little dinner party into a late-night dance party, but mostly, for making me smile so big- thank you. To the boys, for working so hard and spoiling us rotten – thank you, thank you, thank you. I had the time of my life and couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. And there’s no better proof of a good night than some great pictures. For more of the shenanigans, click here.

If only Vernon to Orleans was a little shorter drive! I love you Shan, even after all these years. 🙂 Fun to have the ‘pass around the room’ chat with some of the guests. xooxoxox

What a great idea! I’m so glad it was such a fun night. 🙂 What did the boys make for dinner??

I’m a bit offended that the menu wasn’t featured more prominently in the description and the photos. Sure the ladies are beautiful, but the food was a lot of work! I’ll follow up with a post of the menu and links to recipes … many were definite additions to the library.
