Role Reversal

Like Michael Keaton in the quintissential 80’s movie, I stayed home with the kids yesterday while Shannen headed into work. It wasn’t the first time we’ve done it, but each time we do I gain more of an appreciation for her contribution to Fullerton Corporation. The day started before 6am when Wes broke his streak of sleep-ins, and ended with Shannen’s triumphant return from the rat race at around 7pm, having conquered all sorts of project deliverables, tasks and to-dos.

Observations:

  • Estimate how long a task will take. Then multiply it by 2. Then add time for impromptu potty break, spill cleanup, or comfort time for newly acquired bumps or bruises. *Everything* takes longer than you think it will.
  • The TV is such a tempting entertainer. I appreciate that Shannen uses it very sparingly. Time is spent doing other things.
  • Child minding at the gym is money well spent.  Kids have fun, parent gets a work out in, and even an undisturbed shower!
  • It’s really hard to keep up with housework during the day.  I had big plans of having the house spotless when Shannen got home, but fell far short.
  • Some days I get the “when are you coming home?” text.  Sometimes it’s to plan a dinner time, sometimes it’s because both kids are having a rough day.  I sent those same texts yesterday.  Thankfully, it was more planning motivated than because it was a rough day.  It really wasn’t …
  • … it was a great day!  Full of laughs, fun, and moments to remember (like this one – wes falling asleep at lunch, just like his big sister did.)
  • Even if we had internet yesterday, which we didn’t (fie Rogers, fie), I wouldn’t have gotten any work done.  There is simply no time.  Especially when boy #1 naps for 45 minutes total the entire day 😐

So, Shannen, heading into father’s day weekend, I wanted to turn back the clock a few weeks to add to my Mother’s Day sentiments and express public appreciation for all you do.  It’s a hard job, but I can definitely see the benefits.

Love,

Dan

A rite of passage

Another milestone reached.  She’s officially a real kid.  Inducted into the exclusive club.  Lifetime membership, with one small price.

Saturday night while racing around with Dan and Wes, Jaia fell and hit her forehead on the fireplace hearth.  The cut was deep required stitches.  Off she and Dan went to the hospital, leaving the worried mama at home with the boy.

We’ve been to the hospital with Jaia only one other time, many moons ago.   That was much scarier.  But, as a parent, bringing your child to the hospital for any reason stirs up anxiety, even if you didn’t now it was there.

Dan tells me Jaia was a trooper.  She was laughing, making friends and genuinely enjoying everything about her time out alone with her dad, minus the bleeding gash in her forehead.

I think it helped that stitches have changed in the last 82 years when I had mine.  I cut my chin open on a car bumper while playing hide an seek.  There was no doubt I needed stitches, but instead of a topical cream to freeze the area like Jaia had, I got a needle.  And instead of pretty and almost painless (purple) glue, the doctor sewed my cut together with a needle and black thread.  Pretty.

So now she has a battle scar.  A story to tell all her friends.  Something she’ll carry with her always.  Something else that is all her own.  And so far, she’s proud.  I hope she stays that way.

Dominik - everybody needs one of these – I’m glad she’s ok…

June 13, 2011 - 4:22 pm

Dan - We spent 3 hrs at the hospital in various states of waiting. Everyone we came in contact with was friendly and helpful. We found lots of things to occupy ourselves – Jaia now knows all the words to “The Letter” by the box tops, and “Wooly Bully” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Jaia and I had gone on a “daddy-daughter date” just a few hours before the incident, so getting to spend a few more hours together was special, even if the reason for being there wasn’t much fun. She’s a champ.

Auntie Jenny - She’s so beautiful.

Sarah - I have goose bums! I’m so happy she is ok!!! Like you said it’s a story. And with the beautiful picture to always have with her she will one day get to share this story with her own children, just like you could share your stitches story with her 🙂
Hugs and kisses to all of you!

Celebrate – The day!

You saw all the fun details a few days ago, but they were seriously only a wee slice of the fun we had the day of the party. What a difference it is for us to be celebrating a birthday in the spring.  Jaia’s first birthday party was scheduled for January 1 and was met with a HUGE snow storm.

Wes’ birthday, on the other hand, was bright, sunny and warm.   He couldn’t agree more.  (Check out the most awesome monster shirt ever.  Thank you, H&M).

Enter the smash cake.  Shirt was changed to protect it from the evil blue icing.

It didn’t take him long…

And then the escape…

Time for a game!  Pin the tail on the monster…

Wesley did not win.  But his tail was not the worst one…

The day was busy and LOUD and fun and just what we hoped for our little man.  I know, in the years to come, his first birthday will be a blur, but not to me.  I’ll remember every detail.   And I’ll tell him stories of how happy he was, how he mastered walking just in time to show it off, how he went from guest to guest to greet them in his own way  and how he pulverized that cake in seconds.  I bet he’ll like the cake story best.
