Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence (OAFe)

This week’s award goes to Creemore Springs Premium Lager. Shannen and I were at the Coldplay concert on Friday night at the Corel Centre (which was good – Shannen will review) , and as it was St. Patrick’s Day, beer was required. I had seen on the way up to our seats that a 24 oz was $10.25. Ouch. Nevertheless, I headed down to one of the many canteens to get an overpriced Canadian or Coors Light, and there on tap was Creemore Springs!

I’ve enjoyed Creemore Springs for the past couple of years on tap, and the past 6 months in bottles. It’s usually priced as a regional premium – less than Stella but more than Rickards. All of a sudden, $10.25 wasn’t as painful. Funny how everything’s relative.

Enjoy your OAFe, Creemore!

Today is my lucky day.

Today is awesome. Here’s why:

1. My gorgeous niece turns two today. I found out about her arrival late one night after far too many hours at a crammed and unbelievably loud Irish pub two years ago today. Exactly what I needed at that point … another reason to celebrate!
And if you think she’s lucky now … imagine the birthdays she’ll have as she gets older. Not many other days of the year guarantee you a celebration in every bar in every town and city. I hope she likes green beer, because she’s not going to have much choice in the matter. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVERY!!!

2. I have a date with Chris Martin tonight. Ok, no I don’t, but COLDPLAY is in town and we have tickets to see them. I’m pretty excited. It makes the drive out to Kanata, the horrible traffic and the ridiculously over-priced beer, which we plan to consume guiltlessly, well worth it.

HAPPY ST. PADDY’S DAY TO YA!

Hey Little Lady……..

On Humphrey’s first walk through the Glebe last weekend, we happened upon the cutest little thing.

At first glance she just looks like you average happy little poodle mix (midly embarrassed because her owner made her wear a sweater), but once you take a closer look, her super uber adorableness becomes obvious.

Check out those lashes! They are fabulous. I am more than jealous. It looks like this little cutie spent the afternoon glamming up at M.A.C., just knowing that she’d run into handsome Humphrey dog…and me with a camera, of course.

Kristin. - I came back for a second look. How adorable are the eyelashes?! And I don’t even like those kinds of dogs. That one is CUTE.

W is for Winner

Dan has won again. This time it is movie passes to tonight’s early screening of V is for Vendetta at Silver City.

I haven’t heard much about this movie yet, but it stars Natalie Portman and I adore her. My fascination with her began in the early days with her portrayal of ‘Marty’ in the movie Beautiful Girls, one of my all time favourite movies. But she was also fantastic in Heat, Garden State (!!) and Closer. I won’t deny that she’s made some duds over the years. C’mon…Mars Attacks? Cult classic or not, I think it stinks.

Anyhow, all this to say that I am very excited to go. Dan and I rarely get to the watch movies on the big screen, so this is going to feel like it did for Annie when Daddy Warbucks dressed her up and brought her to the show for the very first time – Only my hair will be much less curly…and I don’t think the weather will allow for the cute red dress.

dan - It’s hard to knock a free movie. So I won’t be too hard on “V for Vendetta”. It’s hard to categorize, but if you enjoy evil empire films/books (1984, Brave New World), or contemporary anti-US foreign policy political criti-dramas (Syriana, 3 Kings), you should probably see this film.

This film was James McTiegue’s first as director, after tons of assistant director credits on movies such as Dark City and The Matrix. Given his past projects, you would expect to be immersed in the “V for Vendetta World”, rich in mythology and atmosphere. However, I never found myself lost in another world. It lacked the vision and top-down design of a movie like “Sin City”, or his previous projections. I’m never convinced that I’m observing a complete alternate world. There are more people than just the director responsible for this (art direction, production design, etc), so I will lay blame on them all.

The two lead actors balance that negative … Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaver are great. The former shaved her head for the role, and the latter manages to provide depth to his role despite being behind a mask for all or most of the film.
