Before we forget – September 4th

Jaia experienced her first celebrity sighting last night and in the tiny mountain town we’ve been staying in, no less. The local Pizza hut was advertising a ‘Night with Elmo’. Or at least he was going to be at Pizza hut from 4 to 8 on September 2nd. I was pumped.

I tried to get Jaia excited about the prospect, but the concept of ‘meeting’ someone doesn’t really register at this age. She probably equates meeting someone with seeing someone and she sees Elmo all the time. She has a couple of Elmo books, a few Elmo stuffed toys and every now and then he shows up on tv singing “la la la la la la la la…”. So when I would ask, “are you excited to go meet Elmo tonight??”, she would nod her head vigorously, and then move on to something else. She wasn’t really excited. Sure, she’d love to see Elmo, but why would that be exciting? Move on.

We walked in and she saw him right away.

And then she pointed him out to us.

And then he approached us.

And then he arrived.  He was all hers.

And then she showed him her toy.

And then Elmo clapped?  Perhaps he was impressed by the toy.

Pure delight.  I loved seeing her this happy.

Best. Day. Ever.

Auntie Jenny - Every look on her face here is so precious!

Before we forget – August 31st

We are cottaging in the the Poconos. Out of all of us, Humphrey and Bella (or Hunny and Bada, as Jaia calls them), are having the most fun. But we humans are also having a wonderfully relaxing visit with my parents and my sister. I even snuck in a nap this afternoon. Glorious.

And tommorow? Shopping.

I love being on vacation.

Before we forget – August 29th

A few of our friends and family members have keen, keen eyes.  I posted pictures yesteray of Jaia with food smeared all over her face, but what her biggest fans were noticing was her bangs, and the fact that I had cut them.

Normally, a baby’s first hair cut is one parents leave as long as possible, take a million pictures of and quite likely cry over (well, the mamas, anyway).  It was not that way with us.  I decided at the last minute a couple of nights ago that something had to be done about Jaia’s hair.  My intention for months has been to let her bangs grow out so that -at some point – she’d have hair that was all one length.  It was a little risky and unconventional for a little girl, but it was what I decided.

And then Jaia’s independence took the reigns.  Although she adores wearing hats, she despises wearing any kind of elastic or barette in her hair.  No amount of showing her of how pretty she is in the mirror has convinced her to keep hair accessories in.  So her bangs were spending the majority of the day in her eyes.  And it was starting to bother her.  And it was driving me nuts.

So out of the blue, I grabbed the scissors and *snippety snip* –  they were shorter.  Not enough for anyone to notice – or so I thought – just enough to be functional.  I didn’t want to make a big deal of it because I literally cut off less than half an inch it was in no way meant to be a *real* first haircut.  That will come – with a little more pomp and celebration…and tears from the mama – and this way I have a more months to get ready for the real thing.  Or to try to convince that little (stubborn) bean to leave a barette in now and again.
