Dinners from Around the World: Italian Edition

On Saturday night the crew headed out for our latest, impromptu, and very long-overdue, DFATW. Destination: The Black Tomato. It is located in the Byward Market, and although I’ve passed by countless times and have always heard wonderful things, It was my first visit. I wasn’t disappointed.

This DFATW included 5 new joiners, which turned out to be perfect because some of the regulars were MIA. And though I gave everybody very little time to decide (I suggested the outing on Thursday) and offered a less-than-exciting culinary choice (we’ve already done Italian, circa Jen Fullerton’s birthday, September 2004) I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

I have to admit that the highlight for me was the dessert menu, or should I say, one dessert in particular. The moment I entered the tiny room, my eyes were drawn to a small blackboard above the bar. There, written in chalk, were the words, ‘Peanut Butter Pie’. I knew immediately that I would have to sample such a simple, yet delicious sounding creation. And I was not the only one that was enticed.

The waiter’s description (we asked before we even ordered our meal to make sure our selection would leave an appropriate amount of room if the dessert was to be in our future) was not very exciting. “It looks like pumpkin pie”. Hmmm. And it turns out that he had never tasted it due to a nut allergy, but assured us he’d be willing to risk his health to bring us each a piece if we so desired. We appreciated his bravery, but I think it was him adding that the restaurant ‘sells out of it all the time’ that convinced us. My original order of pork tenderloin quickly changed to a smaller and more reasonable artichoke flatina.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Once dinner had ended, the original interest in the dessert had waned…all but for Kris Peterson and I. We were the real troopers. That or we just both ordered most wisely. We decided to continue with our wise choices and decided to split a piece of PBP. Again, we were not disappointed. The rest of the DFATWers knew immediately that they had made the wrong decision when they saw the faces we made after the first bite. And the second. And third. The Peanut Butter Pie was, literally, to die for.

Now, I’ve had a lot of desserts over the years, but I have to admit, that this came close to the best I’ve ever eaten. There is a good chance that I will re-visit the Black Tomato again in the near future. And not for their dinner menu.  As interesting, not like the version they have posted on their website and delicious as it was, they really got me at dessert.

Damn…I just made myself hungry again.

Kris - My mouth is still watering.

That was a great night, everyone! Let’s do it again soon!

July 11, 2006 - 10:18 am

Shannen - Of course.

Our plan is always to make it a regular event (I think we once chose the 3 Friday of every month), but that never seems to last. Hopefully we’ll pick it back up in the fall when people have more time on their hands…..

So glad you guys joined us…and that Kurt shared a bite of his pork tenderloin.

Baby pool time!

Everyone knows that you don’t really enjoy an event unless you’re betting on it. So, we’re giving everyone a chance to guess the birthday and weight of the new Fullerton in the Great Fullerton Baby Pool!

It’s half populated already because we launched it during the weekend Murphy Family Reunion. Fullerton/Sweets and friends – read on!

Click on the pool to make it bigger.

The Fullerton Baby Pool! Click to enlarge

The Prize

  • The winner of the baby pool will receive a photograph of the new Fullerton in a t-shirt saying “I love the winner”.

The Rules

  • One square per person.
  • First person to speak for a square in comments claims it.
  • If an empty square wins, the prize will go to the next populated square down from the empty winner.
  • No bellyaching if you lose.

How It Works

  • The top numbers are the last digit of the date of birth. So if you pick “7”, then it means you have picked the 7th, the 17th AND the 27th.
  • The side numbers are the last digit of the weight. So if you pick “8”, then it means you have picked 8 ounces (all pounds). If you pick “5”, then it means you have picked 5 ounces AND 15 ounces (all pounds).
  • So, if the baby is born on January 21st, and weighs 8 pounds 7 ounces, then Brittany Spriggs would win. Got it?

Other

  • In the interest of disclosure, the due date is January 16th.
  • I will update the pool as squares are claimed.
  • Jen: can you take this to the August Long event to sign up the unwired members of our family? We received the invite from Mel but will not be able to make it :'(
  • Any questions let us know.

My sister is nuts.

9_flyin high.jpg

As part of her 4th of July plans, my sister and her boyfriend up and decided to go skydiving. She claims it was phenomenal. I believe her, but I still think she’s nuts.

July 7, 2006 - 9:52 am

The Dread Pirate Lindsay - Liz my beautiful cousin, this is all i have to say to you:

Crazy by Gnarls Barkley
I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that phase.
Even your emotions have an echo
in so much space

And when you’re out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy
Does that make me crazy
Does that make me crazy
PROBABLY (Note: CD version and radio version are different. The other has POSSIBLY here)

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice
That’s my only advice

Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you’re in control

Well, I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember Is thinking, I want to be like them

Ever since I was little, ever since I was little oh it looked like fun
And it’s no coincidence I’ve come
And I can die when I’m done

But maybe I’m crazy
Maybe you’re crazy
Maybe we’re crazy
Probably

July 7, 2006 - 10:02 am

dan - You guys are gullible … haven’t you ever heard of blue-screen special effects? Liz was in a warehouse somewhere suspended from a rope or something. No skydiving took place.

The moon landing was a hoax too.  We all know you couldn’t actually walk on cheese.

So…

Aiding in the recruitment drive to find new writers for forgetful.ca, Shannen and Dan have a special announcement:

Surprise!.jpg

The newest Fullerton will be making his/her big entrance in January 2007.

Expect his/her blog contributions to start sometime in 2015 or 2016. Until then, Dan and Shannen will have to keep you up to date.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, ultrasounds are awesome. Incredible. Unbelievable. This picture was taken after lunch and Peanut was fast asleep. After a few nudges, the technician was able to wake him/her up forcing him/her to do a big stretch, roll over and go right back to sleep. Looks like sleepiness is genetic. There’s no doubt this is Dan’s child.

July 6, 2006 - 9:41 am

Ben - Amazing! Congratulations. (and a nice photographic composition)

July 6, 2006 - 9:56 am

The Dread Pirate Lindsay - Well I just have to say that thats my little cousin in there and that getting the chance to she Braoofra before he/she is even born is amazing! I’m so excited for you guys and I can’t wait til he/she enters thi crazy world. Love yas!

July 6, 2006 - 9:59 am

shannen - BRA00FRA! An excellent name suggestion. Any others?

July 6, 2006 - 10:00 am

Liz - That’s the coolest thing ever…it looks like a little person!!! Incredible…!!!

July 6, 2006 - 10:20 am

Kris - Yay! Congratulations!

July 6, 2006 - 10:59 am

Sonja - No wonder Tom Cruise bought his own machine!! That’s awesome. Congrats again you guys.

July 6, 2006 - 10:05 pm

Gary - I don’t have a girls name for you, but if’s a boy I will make the ultimate sacrifice and allow you to take the name I have reserved for my future child. No, no. Don’t thank me. it’s the least I can do. Little Naveed can thank me when he grows up.

July 7, 2006 - 6:50 am

dan - 1) If you were unable to wake him/her with the poking, it would be taking after dad. However, since he/she was napping in the middle of the day, that’s definitely taking after mom.
b) Naveed is a ridiculous name. No dice. However, we are considering Garold.
iii) Ultrasounds are amazing 🙂

July 7, 2006 - 1:59 pm

Gen and Steve - Hey Guys!

We happened to find ourselves on your site recently and discovered this FABULOUS news! Congratulations you guys…what a beautiful way for you start off 2007! We hope Mr. Nanook wins the baby pool!!

July 7, 2006 - 2:15 pm

LISA - Nice work you two! I have been anxiously awaiting this news and I am thrilled for you guys.
That kid is going to have two awesome parents…I’m putting my vote in for GAROLD. Or maybe WYATT.

July 7, 2006 - 3:08 pm

Joel - Congrats…..Dan I always knew you could do it! My vote for the name would have to go to Kirk! Although we are thinking of naming our cat Kirk (whenever we get one)!

Ultrasounds are really cool, wait till it is giving you the finger, or at least has the appearance of giving you the finger……

August 23, 2006 - 12:35 pm

Marsha - Congrats Shan and Dan! – now Shan, you know I have the perfect name for your bambino….good for either a boy or a girl….

Astro

I like my in-laws.

We had a great Canada Day Long Weekend at the 1st Annual Murphy Family Reunion, in Blue Mountains, ON (near Collingwood).

Highlights included a game of Charades that produced images that will haunt the Murphy cousins for years to come, a game of soccer baseball where the Murphellertons had victory stolen from their clutches by the Haikinjeaus, and poker shark Brad, who must wish we were playing Texas Hold ‘Em for money instead of just bragging rights.

Here are some gems courtesy of the Shan-o-cam …

July 5, 2006 - 10:53 am

The Dread Pirate Lindsay - you know “danny”-boy, maybe at the next family reunion you can attempt to take back the cup of soccer baseball victory…i highly doubt it though; as no one slides into first like my fauja (aka. father). haha. it was an awwesome weekend and I will forever cringe whenever there is a standing applause for anything. hahahah *nervous laughter*.

July 6, 2006 - 10:03 am

Liz - I’m not ashamed that the parents/uncles/aunts put us to shame on Sunday night…I do regret consuming more alcohol that night than I did the entire weekend, making the drive home on Monday less than pleasant. Thank god for Tim Hortons coffee and Egg McMuffins.

July 7, 2006 - 7:45 am

Liz - I didn’t realize how perfectly you captured Uncle Pat’s Charade!!!

July 7, 2006 - 9:19 am

Shannen - Oh yes. Pure magic.

I’m also a fan of Auntie Kerry’s rendition of the Thong Song. 😐

July 7, 2006 - 9:48 am

The Dread Pirate Lindsay - i’d just like to add how i am sscared for life because of that photograph of uncle pat… clapping will always be a remembrance of that weekend for me. it definately is a classic shot – as is the one of auntie kerry.

July 7, 2006 - 11:07 pm

The other half of the clapping - Ok Shan and Dan,
First of all I want to say your little peanut is awesome. She looks just like me. And another thing, last night I was at Deryk’s for Mack’s birthday and had to endure Michelle, Deryk and Pat clapping. This will be for now and ever be the Lemme joke. My hubby is having a great time with this.
