Project 365

As I was surfing the MANY photo blogs that I’m currently addicted to, I kept coming across people’s 365s.  Make that Project 365.  My most favourite is this one.  The idea is that you take a picture a day for a full year to ‘document’ that year rather than have it fly by unnoticed. Photojojo gives an excellent synopsis

Anyone who has read this blog for the past two years know that I tried this before.  I tried to take a photo per day for Jaia’s first year.  It was not easy.  Not every day is photo worthy.  But I tried my best for being a new mother, an exhausted new mother.  I missed a lot of days, but I have no regrets about the time I spent in front of the computer updating forgetful.ca. I often look back at those photos from Jaia’s early days.  They make me smile.

So I’m going to try again.  As part of my resolutions, I want to take more photos AND spend more quality time on the computer rather than wasting hours with nothing accomplished.  My Project 365 solves that.  And I get to walk away with a memoir of that year…without all the failed attempts to scrapbook or journal the memories.  Turns out I’m a memory blogger, so why fight it?

While I can’t promise a photo every single day, I’m going to try my hardest. I have a feeling that 2009 will be worth remembering.

And if you catch me slagging off, I hope you’ll give a swift kick in the behind.  Nothing like guilt to help me keep up my end of the deal.  Any fellow bloggers want to join Project 365 for 2009?

Chris - Ha! First!

Four Christmases (and two birthdays) – Part Deux

It seems like eons since all of this happened now, but with a couple of big firsts for Jaia, it definitely deserves a recap.  Plus, with no holidays or even a long weekend in sight for months, I may have to live in the past for a little while just be able to cope with the dark mornings, never-ending snow and bitter cold.  Today, -31 degrees.

I left off last time with Dan and I (not) rigning in the New Year, while the birthday girl slept peacefully after a long, full, happy birthday.  My intention was to stay up until 11:51 pm, the moment she was born two years earlier, so I slip in, give her a kiss and wish her a very happy birthday – but I was fast asleep myself.  There’s always next year…

January 1 – We checked out of the Bess and back into the Sheraton (worth it for the party, but checking in an out of three hotels in three days would not normally be my recommendation).  With everything closed we bided our time before going over to awesome aunt Susie’s Saskatoon house for an Afghan feast.  It was beyond delish! One of the best meals I’ve ever had.

January 2 – We woke up early as we had a looooooong day ahead.Dan, Jaia, Jen and I were driving from Saskatoon to Calgary with all of our holiday loot and our 6 gigantic suitcases.Thankfully we didn’t hit any bad weather, because the drive was long enough with me just barely fitting in the back seat.

January 3 – We piled back in the car, thankfully with much less stuff and headed to Panorama for a few days of skiing (Dan) and relaxing (me) with Dan’s dad’s side. We’ve been two other times since we’ve been together, and the drive up the steep, narrow, snow-covered, icy mountains never fails to scare the crap out of me.Jan and I typically spend much of the last half of the drive looking through our fingers as we cover our eyes.Terrifying.But Dan always gets us there safe, and never seems to break a sweat.I hope Jaia takes after him in that respect.

January 4-5 – The days, spent out on snowboards for the rest of the crew (Jaia and I explored and took about a million photos).  The nights were spent eating amazing comfort food and watching movies by the fire.  Ahhhhh!!!  I haven’t been that relaxed in ages.  Well-deserved.

The highlights of the trip for me though, both happened in the afternoon of the 5th.  Dan’s dad took his granddaughter over to the rental shop and rented her a pair of boots and skis.  My two-year old daughter was going skiing for the first time with the best instructor I know.  We all stood around like paparazzi at the bottom of the hill snapping photos while she got her skis snapped on and as they headed up the magic carpet to the top of the bunny hill.  And then at the top, they did the unthinkable…they skiied!  And she loved it.  LOVED IT!  Smiled and laughed the whole time as she swerved from one side of the hill to the other ‘chasing’ Dan and I.  I was beaming with pride.  At just 2 she’s done something I’ve never been able to do – ski without fear.  I hope it continues.

Once we got home from the big day, we went straight for another first.  Jaia got a haircut.  This time it was her grandma in charge.  I thought she might fuss alittle, but she sat there, good as gold, staring straight at the mirror, watching her personal stylists every move.  And when it was al said and done, she was a happy, happy camper.

January 6 – I woke up a year older.  I was immediately had a coffee placed in my hand followed by a delicious breakfast.  Not long after Jen, Dianna and I headed to the spa where we were all SPOILED rotten. It was amazing.

We piled in the car in the early afternoon and made the trek back to Calgary to meet Uncle Dimpy again and celebrate with dinner at an amazing restaurant.  The food was so good and the company was even better.  Even Jaia pooping her pants (with no extra clothes or no store nearby to rescue us  – no, we never learn) did not put a damper on the evening.  I went to bed a very, very happy girl.  Spending time with my favourite people in the world over the last two weeks starting with my family in Ottawa and ending with Dan’s – who are now my family – made this holiday the best I’ve ever spent.

Try and top that, 2009!

Auntie Jen - Correction to January 2nd – you forgot about the white-out conditions from Saskatoon to Rosetown! I feel like vomiting just thinking about it. Maybe I tend to exaggerate these things but I swear visibility was like, zero. I too was glad Dan was there to drive us safely…. espcecially with Jaia in the jeep – such precious cargo.

What an awesome recap to a great week! I can’t belive my next visit with you guys is already around the corner…..:)

Her favourite.

Jaia loves candy canes.  Like crazy loves them.  I can’t deny using them as a bribery tool now and then – like i did today to get her to play nice with Mama and pose for a picture or two…

January 30, 2009 - 9:53 pm

Heather - Does she like the regular ones (peppermint) or fancy flavors like strawberry (my fav)?
Bribery is a good tool.

January 31, 2009 - 11:56 am

Shannen - The one in the picture is strawberry and it’s definitely her new favourite.

Sometimes…

I have been known to take a lot of pictures.  Too many?  I don’t think so.  But I do find that I lose track of some of my favourites, only to find them months later when I’m least expecting it.  Like this one.  A new (old) favourite.

Potty time. All the time.

I’ve been meaning to post this for some time now, but I was too afraid to jinx it.  Jaia is officially potty trained.  She uses the toilet 100% of the time and I am 100% THRILLED!

A confession:

The early days of potty training make you wish you could go back to the easy days of diaper changes.  I found myself following her around asking her constantly if she needed to go to the potty, worrying that we’d have an accident while were out, though that rarely happened.  But in true Fullerton fashion, When we have an accident, we go all out.  Pardon the pun.

The story goes like this: We had spent an absolutely lovely day downtown Ottawa in November.  We were Christmas shopping and decided to stop for lunch at the Brig, a pub located steps from where we had originally parked.  As soon as we sat down Jaia asked to go to the potty.  We trudged down the most wonky, narrowest stairs I may have ever descended.  We squeezed into the TINY stall got her ready, plopped her on the toilet and…nothing.  False alarm.  “All done now!”, she claimed.  So we got her ready, washed hands, headed up the stairs.

2 minutes later, she asked to go potty again.  Repeat the above X3 and still no toilet action.  So the next time she asked, we kind of ignored…or hesitated.  And then I saw the face.  You know the face… and I picked her up and raced down those stairs two at a time.  Too late.  Without an extra set of clothes (my fatal mistake), I had no choice but to clean her up and carry her, bottomless, through the restaurant to our table where I could put her into her snow suit.  Sans pants.  Ew.  😐

Now we were eager to get her home (obviously) so we quickly paid our bill and headed toward the car.  As soon as we got there, she made the face again.  Now we had nothing to change her into.  Dan did what any super dad would do and quickly removed his t-shirt to wrap around her.  Problem was, her snowsuit was a one piece and was now soiled, and we needed something to keep her warm in the cold car, so Dan wrapped his jacket around her.  Perfect.

Picture this.  Baby: snug in car seat wearing a t-shirt as pants, wrapped in a man’s coat.  Man: standing in the parking garage shirtless.  Mama: laughing hysterically.

Moral of the story.  Always bring extra clothes.  You never know when or who will need them.
