For comedic relief during game 7 between the Carolina Hurricanes and our Edmonton Oilers (yes, I had firmly secured a seat on the badwagon), Dan and I began flipping back and forth between CBC (Canadian) coverage and NBC (American) coverage.
Hilarious. My favourite example of NBC’s inexperience with broadcasting hockey games was when the announcer called it an inning rather than a period. Ahhhh…brings back memories of the Fox puck.
Kel - An INNING? Please tell me you’re kidding. I don’t even care about these things, and I still find this deeply disturbing.
dan - I planned the “flip back and forth” as a study in differences in coverage style. I didn’t expect such a blatant faux pas.
The other observation was the difference in how they commentated on the confusing first period delayed penalty -> hand on puck in crease = a) goal, b) penalty shot, or c) penalty. NBC was certain it was a goal, and was shocked when it wasn’t. CBC was certain it was a penalty, but could have accepted a penalty shot. I was certain that an Edmonton defender touched it near the boards before it entered the crease, so thought the discussion moot.
