Rainy Day

After the most gorgeous early April long weekend in my memory, it’s been a bit hard to swallow that this entire week (so far) has been cloudy, rainy and grey.  But you can only hide from the weather for so long…

Soon after we’d located a couple of good puddles, our mission changed from splashing to ‘worm scouting and saving’.  Every one we saw on the road HAD to be picked up and moved back to the grass.  And since Jaia is, well….3 and lacks the coordination it takes to do the job, I was forced to gently remove the worms from danger.  I did not sign up for this.

Dan - You must really love our child if you’re touching worms for her. I wonder if I should plant the seed that spiders should be saved as well?

shannen - Two things I should mention:

1) I used two sticks to pick the worms up. I’ll save them, but I refuse to touch them. Barf.

2) I’m living a double life. In front of Jaia I pretend that spiders aren’t scary and that she has nothing to be afraid of. But the truth is… I’M LYING. I’m terrified and cannot be within 10 feet of the 8-legged beasts. You’d better not make me ‘save’ even one unless saving actually means smooshing them with a shoe.

contributor mark - Jaia’s not still afraid of spiders, is she? I thought I convinced her of their usefulness last week.

shannen - (Second time today my anti-spam word is bunion)

Contributor Mark: Valiant effort, Mark, but alas spiders still send her screaming. And I can’t take any blame for it. I’m not sure where it comes from.

rachel - I used to “save” worms…or so I thought. I would see them wriggling along the pavement and worry they would dry out…so I dropped them in the deepest puddle I could find. It wasn’t until years later that I learned they come out of their holes to avoid drowning, not to seek out puddles. Oops.
