I never liked people knocking at my door trying to sell me stuff, but the dislike has become more acute now that a knock at the door = barking dog, and always seems to line up with Jaia’s nap time. I can’t foresee *anything* that I would be interested in that comes to my door uninvited.
We reduced door knockers to nearly zero with an ugly brass “no soliciting” sign on our mailbox. The only knocks are now high school food drives (technically soliciting, but I’m OK with that) and Jehovah’s Witnesses (who obviously don’t consider salvation-selling soliciting). This sign also scares away the weekend flyer package 50% of the time, which was an unintended consequence. We like reading the flyers on Saturday morning over coffee.
That leaves junk mail and telemarketers as the last uninvited intrusions into our peaceful lives and we’ve made ourselves very hard to find by telephone (Primus VOIP, still ~$26 a month including tax, check it out!).
Imagine my delight then when I came across this article (source: Globe and Mail) that pointed me to reddotcampaign.ca. Turns out Canada Post respects requests to not deliver junk mail to your mailbox! No more preferred client updates or pre-approved gold cards! I’m also eco-conscious when it’s easy, so what better way to cut down on the amount of paper you put out to the curb for recycling?
If you carry through with this because I tipped you off, post a comment. Let’s see how much of an impact we have.
Saje - I’m in! I am going to go and do this post haste!
Katie - This is amazing.. I must admit I click to you from Heather’s blog and secretly look at your baby pics. I can’t keep quiet anymore, thank you for this! Junk mail haters unite.
Gary - I am doing this right now. I’m tired of all the waste mail I get and the calls I receive and the people visiting. I also signed up for the the Do Not Call list on the CMA website that the Red Dot site links to.
Jessie - THANK YOU. I just signed up. This is awesome. Or it will be when I stop getting so much juink mail.
Danielle - AMAZING! I just signed us up. Hellooooooo freedom!

heh.
I kind of like getting junk mail, especially credit card applications with pre-paid envelopes included. I like filling up the envelopes with the rest of our junk mail, sealing it up, and walking it down to the mailbox.
