Today is my grandparents’ 65th wedding anniversary. They were married on April 26th, 1942 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. It was during the Second World War, and Grandpa was serving in the Air Force.
It got me wondering what the tradional gift would be for a 65th wedding anniversary. For your first you are supposed to give paper. 10th? Tin/aluminum. (Is that really better than paper?) 25th? Silver. 50th? Gold. 65th? Nothing. Nope, there’s nothing listed. It’s not all that common for people to be married to one another for that long, so on most charts I found, there wasn’t anything listed for anything over 60. And if there was something listed, it was a repeat of the 60th anniversary gift: diamonds. Not bad. So every five years after you are married over 60 you can expect a diamond. Excellent. Well worth the wait I suppose.
65 years is quite the milestone. That’s 23,740.74 days. 569,777.83 hours. 34,186,669.8 minutes. You really, really have to love someone to have enough to talk about after the first 11,000 days. And it seems they did.
My grandparents really set an example for the rest of us. I’m in awe of them and how amazing they are. It’s adorable to see them so in love after all these years (or 23,740 days) and Dan and I aspire to follow in their footsteps. We only have 63 years and one month to go…
