OAFE Award: Farm Boy Pecan Pumpkin Pie

In the past, people have tried to take things that ‘go together’ and package them that way, rather than letting the combination be up to the consumer. A glaring example of how this has gone wrong is:

Anyone who has ever tasted this stuff knows just how horribly wrong it went. In fact, the only person I’ve ever known who liked it was my brother. But then, there are *stories* (which I’m sure he’ll deny) that he used to eat wet dog food and like it, so I’m not too trusting of his tastebuds.

Another example is the short-lived McCain microwave ‘Burger and Fries’. I searched for a photo, but that disaster was apparently forgotten (or erased from people’s memories) by everyone but me. In case you feel slightled at not getting the opportunity to try them, fear not – they were disgusting. The basic idea was good, but there was no way to deliver decent bun softness, burger hotness and fry crispiness in the early days of the microwave. It all turned into lukewarm mush. And I bet they were expensive too. Terrible.

ppp.jpgNow, on the other hand, some things were just meant to go together. On a weekend trek to Farm Boy, my salivary glands were kick-started with one glance at this week’s pie special: Pecan Pumpkin. Pumpkin pie is easily one of my favourites (except when I try to make my own – long story :|) and maybe this is because it is only available for shorts bursts a couple of times per year. But then, to make my temptation skyrocket to new levels, and to easily tempt the untemptable Dan, Farm Boy goes and adds pecan pie to the mix. Why has no one thought of this before? Or if they have, why was it not brought to my attention before now?

My advice: go buy yourself one right now. It was beyond delicious. So good it didn’t even need topping. In fact, the boring ice cream that we had with it sort of took away from the pie. I found myself gobbling up the ice cream so that I would only be left with pie that I could eat sloooooooooooowly, savouring each creamy, yet crumbly, bite. Yup, it’s that good…and very well deserving of this week’s OAFE.

Congrats Farm Boy. You’ve done it again. Be proud.
