Jaia loves Wes. There’s not doubt about it. She hugs him the tightest and never passes by where he is without stopping to give him a kiss or say hello. She brags about him to whoever will listen and never complains about his crying, his poopy pants or having to wait while we cater to his needs before hers are met.
The other day, when we arrived at the doctor’s office for Wesley’s first shots, the receptionist made a joke about Wes sticking his tongue out at her. To the adults in the room, it was funny. To the 3 year old, it was an all out insult. I couldn’t believe her reaction! Her face turned red and tears streamed down her cheeks. She approached the lady and in a firm, but still Jaia-quiet voice, told her not to say mean things about her brother.
In the split second before I was able to comfort my daughter and explain that the lady wasn’t being mean, my heart grew two sizes. I’d always hoped Jaia would like her new brother – but the way she actually feels about him far exceeds my hopes. She loves him with all her heart. And that’s a beautiful thing.
