Day 54 – Small wonders…

This year I made a bigger effort than in past years to try to pretty up the outside of the house.  I am by no means a gardiner.  Not even a little bit.  My skills are very lacking in that department, but I am trying and I am learning.  We were lucky to have Grandma Dianna here for a week who helped transform our yard from lacking to lovely in just a couple of days.

One of my simple attempts was to buy one of those pre-planted flower pots to hang in the front of our house.  Jaia picked the pink one.  We brought it home and hung it up.  A little water, a little sunshine and it was good to go.  Or so I thought.  Despite my efforts, the plant just wasn’t doing well.  The flowers were dying quickly and falling off and the leaves were yellowing.  It wasn’t pretty.  But it turns out there was a very good reason for the demise f the plant.

So in order to try to save it, I headed out with my scissors in hand and began snipping off the dead and dying bits.  As I proceeded to turn the pot to get to the other side, a bird flapped it’s wings from inside the pot and flew out.  It scared the bejeezus out of me and I let out a high pitched scream which in turn, scared the bejeezus out of Dan and Jaia.

As you may know, we are no strangers to feathered friends in our yard.  But it never occurred to me that birds would make their homes in those pots.  But that is definitely what was going on.  Every time we took a peek, there she was – a beautiful grey dove – looking back at us.

This morning though, we got the most lovely surprise.  It seems our dove is a new mama.

My dad tells me that having a dove nest on your property is good luck.  Looking around, I’d have to say that I think he’s right.
