{"id":947,"date":"2008-05-07T09:38:30","date_gmt":"2008-05-07T13:38:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/?p=947"},"modified":"2008-05-07T09:38:30","modified_gmt":"2008-05-07T13:38:30","slug":"i-love-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/?p=947","title":{"rendered":"I love trees."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my reasons for wanting to move from our new, bare, constructiony neighbourhood into a mature, well-established one was the trees.\u00a0 Or lack thereof.\u00a0 I despise looking around and seeing nothing but houses.\u00a0 It was way, way, awy worse in our last neighbourhood &#8211; townhouses as far as the eye could see &#8211; so this place was an improvement&#8230;but not by much.\u00a0\u00a0 They should plant the trees and grass 5 years before starting new construction so that once the houses are up, it already looks homey and green and lived in.<\/p>\n<p>I like green.\u00a0 I like the outdoors.\u00a0 I like feeling surrounded by nature, even when I&#8217;m in the city.\u00a0 So when buying our new house, I focused as much on the outside as I did on the inside.\u00a0 We had a list of requirements.\u00a0 One of them\u00a0was having trees, or some kind of greenery on our property other than grass and a wimpy, barely there baby tree.\u00a0 I wanted big.\u00a0 Full.\u00a0 Healthy.\u00a0 And I got it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/treesm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-950\" title=\"treesm\" src=\"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/treesm-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not only do I adore the new house on the inside, the outside is wonderful.\u00a0 A decent backyard, and a front yard shaded by a beautiful tree.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not exactly a swing on the branches kind of tree, but it&#8217;s taller than the house and very impressive.\u00a0 The backyard\u00a0was bare of trees, but it was something we had planned to work on once we moved in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, as I was flipping through one of the free daily papers, I spotted a blurb at the top of one of the pages.\u00a0\u00a0 It said that Ottawans are invited to register for a free tree to plant on their property.\u00a0 One is available per household, to be picked up in the fall.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to ask me twice.\u00a0 I registered as soon as I got into the building.\u00a0 And then I told all my co-workers to register.\u00a0 And now I&#8217;m telling you (for those of you who live in Ottawa, or used to and still own property here).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What a fantastic idea.\u00a0 I&#8217;m so onboard with any program that\u00a0is in place\u00a0to further green up the city.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s exactly what this one is attempting to do.\u00a0 Their goal is to plant 100,000 trees between 2007 and 2010 to be on target to join the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/billiontreecampaign\/\">Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign<\/a>,\u00a0a major worldwide tree planting campaign with the objective of planting at least one billion trees worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>So.\u00a0 Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawa.ca\/TREE\">www.ottawa.ca\/TREE<\/a> and register for your free tree.\u00a0 You can choose a small one (that won&#8217;t grow over 10 metres) or a large one.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s all on a first come, first served basis.\u00a0 So do it now.\u00a0 Now!\u00a0 Plant a tree.\u00a0 Then you can hug it all you want.\u00a0\u00a0 I plan to.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my reasons for wanting to move from our new, bare, constructiony neighbourhood into a mature, well-established one was the trees.\u00a0 Or lack thereof.\u00a0 I despise looking around and seeing nothing but houses.\u00a0 It was way, way, awy worse in our last neighbourhood &#8211;
