We have nights, maybe even two in a row with no plans to speak of.<\/p>\n<p>As much as I enjoy the calm of those nights, I love when my kids have something to look forward to. \u00a0Especially when what they are looking forward to is spending time together, as a family.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7620\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3168sm.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3168sm.jpg 750w, http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3168sm-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So I came up with a plan. \u00a0Mondays at our house are &#8216;Little Chef&#8217; nights. \u00a0It combines a few of our favourite things and it gets the whole family involved. \u00a0The kids got a cookbook out of the library and they get to pick the recipe. \u00a0We make sure that we have the ingredients on hand and then they get to work.<\/p>\n<p>Last week we cooked up our own version of chicken fried rice. \u00a0The prep work was their favourite. \u00a0The kids cooked the rice, chopped the veggies, and did all the mixing. \u00a0My favourite was they they gobbled up every last grain of rice. \u00a0Or actually, maybe it was seeing the pride on their little mugs when Dan walked in and they showed him what they&#8217;d been up to.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7621\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3169sm.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3169sm.jpg 750w, http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3169sm-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7622\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3172ed.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3172ed.jpg 600w, http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3172ed-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Teaching the kids to cook has so many rewards. \u00a0Not only will they be able to whip me up breakfast in bed in a couple of years, they will learn a real appreciation for food and what goes in to making a meal. \u00a0They are less likely to push their plates away uninterested in dinner, if they were the ones to make it. \u00a0It also creates a completely different relationship with food. \u00a0If they are doing the cooking, they may be a little more interested in trying something that they may otherwise turn their nose up to.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7623\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3177sm.jpg\" width=\"571\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3177sm.jpg 571w, http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3177sm-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So far, in week two (tonight was kind of a cheat &#8211; pancakes &#8211; but I was feeling absolutely terrible and they still did all the cooking and had a blast anyway) Little Chef night is a complete success. \u00a0I have two little people who a super keen to get involved and that is all I can ask for.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7624\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3180sm.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3180sm.jpg 750w, http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_3180sm-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Do you cook with your kids? \u00a0Have any fabulous recipes to share?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My kids love having something to look forward to. \u00a0Some weeks are so jam-packed with activities, visits and special events that we barely have time to look ahead before the next thing rolls around. \u00a0Some weeks though, we welcome a slower pace.
