{"id":5686,"date":"2012-03-29T08:17:49","date_gmt":"2012-03-29T12:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/?p=5686"},"modified":"2012-03-29T08:26:11","modified_gmt":"2012-03-29T12:26:11","slug":"a-corn-dog-by-any-other-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/?p=5686","title":{"rendered":"A corn dog by any other name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We try to make healthy choices when it comes to what the kids eat. \u00a0We choose whole grains. \u00a0We avoid trans fats and MSG and excess sugar and most things deep fried. \u00a0We introduce variety so they can expand their palates. \u00a0But we&#8217;re not perfect. \u00a0We&#8217;re human. \u00a0And we enjoy treating ourselves now and then.<\/p>\n<p>When we go out to eat as a family, we typically make choices about restaurants based on how kid friendly they are. \u00a0And that has nothing to do with the menu, we can make anything work, but we like to go to restaurants that actually want our kids to walk in the door rather than roll their eyes as they see us with 2 little people walking in. \u00a0Most chains are awesome. \u00a0They offer colouring pages, crayons and kids menus. \u00a0Some even have toys. \u00a0The food, though, is mostly just <em>meh<\/em>. \u00a0For all of us. \u00a0But because they handle kids well, that&#8217;s where we go.<\/p>\n<p>So when Dan and I were coming back into town after our mini ski vacay last month and were heading through Westboro exactly at lunch time, we crossed our fingers and braced ourselves for a selection of mostly non-kid friendly establishments. \u00a0You see, this area is super trendy. \u00a0The main street is lined with adorable little unique restaurants, pubs and coffee shops, and a giant MEC and Lululemon, of course. \u00a0But there are few chains.<\/p>\n<p>With very little prior knowledge of most of the establishments, we threw our hands up and picked a place on the block we happened to have parked on.<\/p>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchillsottawa.com\/\">Churchill&#8217;s<\/a>. \u00a0It looked fairly new. \u00a0It was obviously a pub, maybe even a swanky pub, but we figured they&#8217;d have at least a basic lunch menu for us. \u00a0And then, as we walked in, eyes were not rolled. \u00a0Streamers and balloons did not fall from the ceiling, but we didn&#8217;t feel as though we were interrupting the adult convention.<\/p>\n<p>Upon being seated, we found that the menu even had a kid&#8217;s section on the menu. \u00a0And then, when we asked if we could borrow a pen to let Wes draw on a newspaper to keep him busy\u2026they pulled out colouring books, crayons and markers. \u00a0We were shocked but happy. \u00a0The kids went about colouring and barely fought over the pencil case. \u00a0We were relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>The food was AMAZING. \u00a0Yes, it was just a burger (both Dan and I ordered one), but it was SO GOOD. \u00a0Fresh, juicy, delicious. \u00a0I had a 1664 Blanche, which quickly became the yummiest beer I&#8217;ve ever had.<\/p>\n<p>The kids opted for a childhood favourite of mine: Pogos. \u00a0They&#8217;d never tasted them before, but is there anything better than a hot dog on a stick covered in cornbread? \u00a0Don&#8217;t answer that. \u00a0They loved them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/IMG_2821sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5687\" title=\"IMG_2821sm\" src=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/IMG_2821sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"725\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/IMG_2821sm.jpg 725w, http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/IMG_2821sm-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I typically don&#8217;t do restaurant reviews here, and that&#8217;s mostly because we never end up anywhere reviewable. \u00a0But when food quality meets amazingly friendly and welcoming service meets kid friendly, I begin to gush. \u00a0And gush I have. \u00a0To anyone who will listen. \u00a0I love rewarding good service and experiences with word of mouth love, and Churchill&#8217;s deserved that in spades.<\/p>\n<p>If you find yourself in Westboro, with or without your kids in tow, check it out. \u00a0I will be going back. \u00a0The 1664 Blanche is calling my name.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We try to make healthy choices when it comes to what the kids eat. \u00a0We choose whole grains. \u00a0We avoid trans fats and MSG and excess sugar and most things deep fried. \u00a0We introduce variety so they can expand their palates. \u00a0But we&#8217;re not perfect. \u00a0We&#8217;re human. \u00a0And we enjoy treating ourselves now and then.
