{"id":2300,"date":"2010-02-21T18:01:25","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T22:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/?p=2300"},"modified":"2010-02-21T18:01:25","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T22:01:25","slug":"goodbye-to-an-old-friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/?p=2300","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye to an old friend."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And that&#8217;s what he was, a friend. \u00a0To everyone. \u00a0And today, after 16 years, he passed away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Pooner-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2304\" title=\"Pooner 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Pooner-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I started university I got the crazy idea to get a puppy. \u00a0Not the best plan for a university student, but at the time was still living at home and after having lost a puppy in someone else&#8217;s care one day and having never fully recovered, it was something I was sure about. \u00a0I knew I wanted a dog.<\/p>\n<p>And when I saw him, the runt of the little and smaller than a guinea pig, I knew I wanted him. \u00a0We named him Kennedy. \u00a0He was my dog (I was reminded constantly) but we all loved him. \u00a0And we all took care of him.<\/p>\n<p>Over the first few years, Kennedy lived with me, but after some living arrangements with questionable roommates and a worry that he was not being treated by them as well as he could be, the decision was made to have Kennedy move home with my parents &#8216;temporarily&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>He never left them again. \u00a0And although they spent a few years continuing to call him my dog, he was theirs. \u00a0He loved my mom and Dave so much and gave up on me almost immediately. \u00a0It broke my heart a little at first, but I came to realize that they were the perfect home for him. \u00a0They had time for him when I didn&#8217;t. \u00a0And, though they wouldn&#8217;t ever admit to this, I doubt they would have given him up even if I&#8217;d asked for him.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, deciding to get a dog when I was just starting school was the wrong decision, but bringing Kennedy home to be part of our family was not. \u00a0He fit right in. \u00a0He was perfect for us at the time and always.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Dog-on-the-porch-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2307\" title=\"Dog on the porch 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Dog-on-the-porch-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, our boy who was up until that point still playing like a puppy, took a turn for the worst. \u00a0Dan, Jaia and I were down in Virginia for a week and I got a chance to say goodbye. \u00a0I feel so fortunate to have been there.<\/p>\n<p>When you are forced to say goodbye and your heart feels likes it is breaking you question why you did this in the first place. \u00a0But I can say, that having Kennedy be part of our family was worth it. \u00a0He was a constant in our lives when we needed him and without him, the last 16 years would have been a little less rich.<\/p>\n<p>Rest in Peace, little man. \u00a0You will be missed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And that&#8217;s what he was, a friend. \u00a0To everyone. \u00a0And today, after 16 years, he passed away.
