{"id":1340,"date":"2009-04-08T09:20:58","date_gmt":"2009-04-08T13:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.forgetful.ca\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2009-04-08T09:20:58","modified_gmt":"2009-04-08T13:20:58","slug":"venting-makes-me-feel-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/?p=1340","title":{"rendered":"A good rant takes the blahs away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another grey and snowy day.\u00a0 The third or fourth in a row&#8230;IN APRIL.\u00a0 It&#8217;s depressing.\u00a0 It should be warm enough for those few crazies to start wearing shorts and yet we are all still bundled up with coats and mittens on.<\/p>\n<p>This sucks.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s inspired me to talk about a couple of other things that also suck.\u00a0 Call me Cranky.\u00a0 I&#8217;m ok with it.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Segregation of people is never ok&#8230;except when it comes to smokers.\u00a0 And I even have a soft spot in my heart for smokers.\u00a0 As much as I don&#8217;t like their habit, I feel for them.\u00a0 Once considered acceptable, they have\u00a0now been forced away to back alleys, as far away from the rest of us as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Which I think is cool.\u00a0 Because smokers stink.\u00a0 Try as they might to cover it up, the stench remains.\u00a0 Especially in cold weather.\u00a0 And after a looooong winter like we just had and a winter coat that made 8000 trips outside for a cigarette or two\u00a0 every few hours,\u00a0they stink more than usual.<\/p>\n<p>And then, after I push the button to take the elevator up to my office,\u00a0they get in with me.\u00a0 And stand too close.\u00a0 And the smell makes me gag.\u00a0 I try not to, but I do.\u00a0 It&#8217;s gross.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0I have a simple plea.\u00a0 A separate elevator for smokers.\u00a0 Although there were some bumps along the way they eventually accepted being banished to the smoking section, and then outside.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve come to accept not being able to smoke\u00a0in theatres, restaurants, hotels, bars, coffee shops\u00a0 &#8211; after a little while, wouldn&#8217;t they accept having to use their own elevator?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The one problem I see is that it would be broken too often from over use.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude10<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve recently made a discovery about myself.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not one I&#8217;m ashamed of, but one I never really thought about before.\u00a0 Small talk makes me uncomfortable.\u00a0 Some people are fantastic at it (I can think of a couple of friends of mine who could easily chat to a stranger on a flight from Ottawa to France without having a break in the conversation &#8211; you know who you are), but I suck at it.\u00a0 I find it awkward and painful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But worse than regular small talk is office bathroom small talk.\u00a0 If someone is in the stall &#8211; don&#8217;t talk to them.\u00a0 The bathroom is not someplace\u00a0people hang out just for the fun of it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s in and out.\u00a0 Quick.\u00a0 Talk to as few people as possible and make as little eye contact as possible.<\/p>\n<p>But some people feel like it&#8217;s a great time to catch up.\u00a0 They are washing their hands as you come in and they stay until you are washing your hands, talking about the weather, work, the jerk that sits beside them.\u00a0 All the while making me cringe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fight the urge.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t talk to strangers &#8211; in the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So there.\u00a0 The Wednesday morning complaint department.\u00a0 The perfect way to make a crappy day seem less crappy.\u00a0 What do you want to complain about?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another grey and snowy day.\u00a0 The third or fourth in a row&#8230;IN APRIL.\u00a0 It&#8217;s depressing.\u00a0 It should be warm enough for those few crazies to start wearing shorts and yet we are all still bundled up with coats and mittens on.
