Below you’ll find a guest blog post from one of my favourite people about one of his favourite people.\u00a0 EAP was a co-worker turned friend from waaaay back in the day when I was a worker bee and he was an established lawyer\u00a0at a firm in town.\u00a0 Although my\u00a0employment there was short, our friendship has\u00a0made it\u00a0through countless\u00a0address and job changes (all mine) over the years and remains strong to this day.<\/p>\n

On a cold December evening just prior to Christmas, 2003, a disparate bunch of people gathered at Hy’s Martini Ranch for a few drinks after work on a Friday.\u00a0 Although the core of participants were then employees of Lang Michener, the rest were friends or friends of friends.\u00a0 Not satisfied with paying $12 for a glass of wine or $7 for a domestic beer,\u00a0the lot of us\u00a0headed out into the snow to my place (a mere 10 minute walk)\u00a0 where the booze was free, or at least, already paid for.<\/span><\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n There couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8 of us, but we were a very jolly group – several of whom had been imbibing since their lunchtime office Christmas party.\u00a0 For these particular party-goers, the choices were clear cut –\u00a0either was stop drinking now, let the hangover set in and go home to bed, or pour more liquor down your neck to keep the rest of it company in your stomach.\u00a0 They made the obvious choice and we all found ourselves chez moi with a goodly supply of beverages and a desire to engage in some kind of party game.\u00a0 This was the birth of the Hat Game Party.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n For those who remember Dick Clark’s $100,000 Pyramid TV game show from the 70’s and 80’s, the Hat Game is just a cheap rip-off of that concept.\u00a0 Pieces of paper with nouns written on them are folded and mixed up in an old fedora (hence the name “Hat Game”).\u00a0 Teams of 2 take turns getting their partner to say the noun written on each successive slip of paper pulled from the hat, during a one minute time period.\u00a0 You keep the slips of paper your partner guesses and put back the ones you can’t (after taking a 10 second penalty).\u00a0 The hat is passed in succession to each team for their one minute rounds.\u00a0 The team with the most pieces of paper when the hat is empty is the winner.\u00a0 Simple in concept, but oh so difficult in practice.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n From those humble beginnings, the Hat Game grew to a yearly Christmas event.\u00a0 More teams were entered, food was eventually served, sponsors were obtained (the official drink of the Hat Game is Seaview Australian Champagne).\u00a0 But throughout it all, one thing has remained constant.\u00a0 Below are the winners of the first four Hat Games:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n 2003 – Shannen and EAP<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n 2004 – Shannen and Ken<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n 2005 – Shannen and EAP<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n 2006 – Shannen and Kurt<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Notice a common theme?\u00a0 Yep, our Shannen is like the Montreal Canadiens of the Hat Game.\u00a0 Doesn’t matter who her team mate is –\u00a0this chick\u00a0knows how to win.\u00a0 No one ever has, nor probably ever will, equal that amazing four year run of victory for Shan.\u00a0 Sadly, she was unable to attend the Hat Game last year because her motherly duties rightfully took precedence.\u00a0 Two rookies won the Hat Game that year\u00a0and maybe a new dynasty was about to be born.\u00a0 But it was not to be, because neither of last year’s champs will be in attendance this year.\u00a0 SHANNEN – COME BACK AND RECLAIM THE CUP!!!!\u00a0 IT”S TIME TO BREAK SOME RECORDS!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Below you’ll find a guest blog post from one of my favourite people about one of his favourite people.\u00a0 EAP was a co-worker turned friend from waaaay back in the day when I was a worker bee and he was an established lawyer\u00a0at a firm in town.\u00a0 Although my\u00a0employment there was short, our friendship has\u00a0made […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1162"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1162"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1162\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1162"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1162"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/forgetful.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1162"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
